@vapaad For me, the monumental resource consumption of the AI boom remains a special kind of offensive due to its timing. Public discourse on pressing environmental issues may not yet have been on track to lock down specific climate goals, but the planet had just gotten a brief respite due to the pandemic and perhaps not fucking with nature too much was a notion fresh on everyone's minds.

Tech giants are trying to crowbar "AI" into everything right now, because they need to make these services indispensable for society at large. This way our leaders might not have have a choice, but to bail out or otherwise coddle the industry once all this circular financing comes crashing down as it inevitably must.
