In light of US tech oligarchy setting its sights on Wikimedia Foundation, a historical detail I did not know before: #Wikipedia became the non-profit it is today partly as the result of a labour strike of Spanish Wikipedia editors who disagreed with the proposed inclusion of advertisements. Initially, it was not clear what revenue model Wikipedia would get, and Wales moved towards a for-profit model already a year after launch. However, rather than working for free, so Jimmy Wales could profit from their labour via advertising, Spanish contributors forked Spanish Wikipedia as the Encyclopedia Libre Universal. Under the threat of losing the editorial community of such a large language, Wales conceded and set up the non-profit.

That is to say, however imperfect they are, all the digital commons we have are the result of ongoing struggle and hard work to keep them as commons.

I seem to be doing this internet thing wrong. Or my ad surveillance is off. Why, when looking at stripper poles, the Bezos site tries to sell me wire stripping machine? How?

TIL that on platforms now one can write terrible, offensive slurs against LGBTQIA+ folks and immigrants
with zero repercussions. But the second one mentions a project like , the post is automatically removed.

Meta “moderation” policies in 2025: racism, xenophobia, transphobia, homophobia and sexism are allowed; mention of competition is strictly forbidden.

TED is one of the biggest enablers of this "AGI" scam, and one of the biggest ways to circle more money amongst more white dudes. Period.

Why not do an "interview" with the myriads of traumatized, exploited workers and those protesting genocide to discuss "safety"?

Those are not from populations TED is interested in. They don't fit the bill of "a scientist" or "innovator." There are only certain things that Black people are supposed to talk about in front of white saviors.

I went looking for a picture and was not disappointed. bsky.app/profile/iwriteok.bsky

A Bluesky post from Robert Evans (â€Ș@iwriteok.bsky.social‬)
after days of grifters and con men at CES we stumbled upon the booth for VLC. they were all dressed as wizards and told us, "we have nothing to sell, we just decided to show up". i told them I'd been using their software to pirate media for 15 years and they said "keep doing that"

[Turn to CAM 2, flip chair around backward] Meta employees, let me rap at you a minute. Sure, “You Can Always Quit,” as we like to say around here. But at this crucial juncture, you can both protect your own livelihood and do so much more good for the world by not quitting. That’s right! Don’t quit, just stop working. Show up every day, don’t complain, don’t draw attention to yourself. But don’t accomplish anything. If you are working on a project, commit in your heart to never finishing it. This will be your last project at Meta, and you will be “working on it” until they force you out. If others rely on you to get their work done, make sure they can’t. If your role involves reviewing pull requests, you and I both know you can find a reason to reject every one. In fact, wouldn’t it be fun to see how many other employees you can drive out first? If you work in an open office space, make sure you chew loudly at all times. Microwave fish in the break room every single day. Be creative! You’ll have plenty of time to think of ideas, with all the work you’re not getting done.

Hello Hachyderm! Thank you for your patience as we gathered the necessary data to write our announcement blog post regarding Threads.

The short version: Hachyderm has defederated from Threads.

Specifically, this is due to Threads changing their moderation policies and moderator guidance (see press cycle) to be in direct conflict with Hachyderm.

For the data and explainer, please see our announcement blog post:

Turns out I'm exactly the kind of person who would compile kernels with side order of odd assemblers at 2am... with day job alarm set for 0630 too.

And just like so, after compiling at 2AM for some linux thing or other I decided to wipe the #rpi SD and start over. But as lady Chance would have it, I'm booting and rebooting #risc now.

Good thing I got spare SD's

@niutech Sorry, but, can I get more info off of you? System build / version? Cause I'm running 3.11 on

ARM64 Debian
FreeBSD 14.1
aarch 64 Android
9front-10811

And neither works past landing page, with arm deb not even rendering landing page.

2025-01-06

@niutech my bad. Should've specified the system, the build, the exact url. Seems to be working for the landing page, even via curl, but not further. Btw, have you tried going further?

2025-01-06

Soo, finally had time to probe this more. Mothra and Abaco render same "enable js" message on search request. But they at least do display it.

So for now, the difference is just local to landing page. Hm.

2025-01-06

Funny thing this morning - because I AM curious...

So apparently, #python pypi.org doesn't work in #netsurf nor #lynx - it just sends "enable #javascript "message. Which BTW lynx displays, but netsurf does not.

But get this, #mothra and #abaco actually do render js-less pypi. What? Rt?

Haven't yet tried messing with user agents. Will explore further later, as it's round 0630 CET & I gotta get to work to build an Aida set at the theatre that pays for my hobbies. And haven't had coffee yet.

2025-01-06

I've had it. Kind of hard to put my finger on what the definition of the it exactly is, but I'm listening to #thistle via ffplay.

Ain't no overhead will clutter my tiny #rpi box.
