put some thoughts together on the LLM trend and its implications for labor rights. there's a lot to be said about the lofty claims of pro-LLM technologists, but this presumes their promises of efficiency, etc. are true.

a lot of devs have rightfully been pushing to better value the expertise of HTML- & CSS-focused eng more highly, but the actual correct path forward is to actively *devalue* work that does not meet this^ standard.

fwiw i blame this rift largely on the hype-cycle of developer education that teaches HTML as an inconvenience on the way to the thrilling realms of? using react to tilt JSON back and forth.

the Unified Web Site Accessibility Guidelines, which eventually spawned the WCAG, was published in 1995. access/assistive tech have been first-class citizens of web tech for 30 years. if you're still "doing a11y" as the last step of your projects, you've never hit the skill floor of web development

unfortunately the most critical part of this work is not the part with the "best DX"; it's not what the boys are selling courses for. but that's the work! you're literally *less* of an engineer & craftsman if you don't center these values and their priorities, you're just a hobbyist.

i'll leave the questions of the morality of "burning the earth because you can't be bothered to draft an email" to folks who, for some reason, believe such questions have complicated answers, but i tend to doubt it's possible to launder enough intent to atone for the impact

@kayserifserif that’s a recent addition i fear, but tbh i don’t encounter any AI features in my regular usage. install times are like 1000x faster with bun and it has some rly nice QOL features so i think i still recommend
