"As technologists, we are workers first. We cannot individually stop the machine of capitalism from exploiting our labor, and, while this tide will shift, many of us are too romanced by the technofuturist dream of [Large Language Models] — despite widespread, multidisciplinary criticism of the technology and disastrous consequences in its application so far — to easily reconsider our adoption of it."

This critique of “ai” from a labor perspective is searingly good:

“As technologists, we are workers first. We cannot individually stop the machine of capitalism from exploiting our labor, and, while this tide will shift, many of us are too romanced by the technofuturist dream of LLMs […] to easily reconsider our adoption of it.” — @henry, henry.codes/writing/economics-

put some thoughts together on the LLM trend and its implications for labor rights. there's a lot to be said about the lofty claims of pro-LLM technologists, but this presumes their promises of efficiency, etc. are true.

so we are trying to create false, airbrushed memories now?? why do you wish to lie to yourself?? look at Truth in its pockmarked, life-worn face; by god, you must learn to love it. you will lose yourself otherwise

a group of people gathered by a camping tent with the backdrop of a beautiful, if overcast, natural landscape. a Google Photos interface shows how you can choose to artificially alter the sky to "golden hour" or "sky"the sky and lighting in the photo has been artificially altered to that of a "golden hour" sunset

a lot of devs have rightfully been pushing to better value the expertise of HTML- & CSS-focused eng more highly, but the actual correct path forward is to actively *devalue* work that does not meet this^ standard.

like i'm glad you're having fun but no one should pay you for your refrigerator sketch

fwiw i blame this rift largely on the hype-cycle of developer education that teaches HTML as an inconvenience on the way to the thrilling realms of? using react to tilt JSON back and forth.

the Unified Web Site Accessibility Guidelines, which eventually spawned the WCAG, was published in 1995. access/assistive tech have been first-class citizens of web tech for 30 years. if you're still "doing a11y" as the last step of your projects, you've never hit the skill floor of web development

unfortunately the most critical part of this work is not the part with the "best DX"; it's not what the boys are selling courses for. but that's the work! you're literally *less* of an engineer & craftsman if you don't center these values and their priorities, you're just a hobbyist.

i'll leave the questions of the morality of "burning the earth because you can't be bothered to draft an email" to folks who, for some reason, believe such questions have complicated answers, but i tend to doubt it's possible to launder enough intent to atone for the impact

a website that appears as a white limestone castle looming on the forest promontory — you can see its turrets and its great portal whispering through the dense fog that besieges the mountain always. a great sorcerer once paced these vaulted halls, but no more. now it is baleful, and empty...

@kayserifserif that’s a recent addition i fear, but tbh i don’t encounter any AI features in my regular usage. install times are like 1000x faster with bun and it has some rly nice QOL features so i think i still recommend
