This is the 100 year anniversary of humans having an idea of what the heck the sun and all the stars actually are. If you had asked a leading astronomer in 1925 what the sun was, they would say that it's basically the same as Earth, but very hot.

In Cecilia Payne's doctoral thesis she was the first to say, from spectral data, that the sun was overwhelmingly made of hydrogen and helium.

It was later described as "the most brilliant PhD thesis ever written in astronomy".

@danielholt Go for it! The game is great πŸ˜„

@danielholt Isn't it the thing you put on the bed when it starts to get cold at night? 😁

@Sobtanian ah, no, sorry, he doesn't respawn as boss in the boss room, but he keeps chasing you around the entire keep πŸ˜…

2025-06-13

@Sobtanian I came back for the missing weapons and... Yes, he's still there. And he drops the Lord's key again when you beat him again (in case you left any locked door unopened before).

And yes, the escort mission is really good!

@Sobtanian I finally beat the Crimson Fort! That was a really intricate level, there was somuch to explore! I still need to go back and recover two weapons I dropped there, but the mere thought of having to fight that huge thing once again... Makes me want to just ignore the weapons and forge new ones 🀣

@Sobtanian I don't plan on looking stuff up all the time, but I had spent two days running around the first areas in circles, and I couldn't figure it out at all πŸ˜…

Other than that, I want to solve it myself. I really like how the areas have all those details where, if you are really paying attention, you can find a lot of side paths, shortcuts, and so on... And the architecture of the buildings tend to make sense! It's not just there to create the levels, they feel like actual buildings where you then have to find your way through

2025-06-12

@Sobtanian Thanks for the tip! I have been using good materials to forge things so... Yeah, I should apply what you say immediately πŸ˜‚

I'm at the Crimson Fort, I spent way too long figuring out where was the handle to unlock the gate to it...

I finally found* my way into tge next area of #BladesOfFire, and now that I'm finally getting used to the controls and combat style, I'm having a really good time!

Combat is excellent, I have to keep thonking about positioning, tipe of attack, direction, and enemy weaknesses. For example, if I'm using a spear I could do a sweep attack and hot multiple enemies at a time, but that won't work in this room, there are too many colums and the spear will get stuck, so I'd better change to thrusting attacks. And this enemy is only weak to spears in the head, so I can only do high attacks... Also, they've somehow managed to make all weapons fun to use. I wouldn't usually choose double daggers as my weapon, but here it's pretty cool to use them!

As for the map design, it is sometimes confusing, but it is cramped with side paths with secrets and loot, looping paths that interconnect each area nicely, and a lot of things to see.

So yeah, I'm super happy with this game!

* I looked it up online

@Sobtanian I've played a bit of it on the PS5, but I think it's a game that really is meant to be played with keyboard and mouse, so I've never progressed much on console xD

Two Point Hospital free right now on tge Epic Store!!

Ooooh, I played Theme Hospital SO MUCH back in the day... I really want to get into this one! 😍😍😍

@COMPU73E Enjoy! I've been playing it for a while, and right now I'm a bit lost as to where to go in the map right now, but other than that I'm having good fun! 😁

I went to a talk lately that was mostly about something else, but the speaker came out with:

β€œIf you only remember one thing from this talk, remember this. Everyone in this room who likes helping people, raise your hand.”

Every hand, or nearly every hand, went up.

β€œIf you like asking other people for help, keep your hand up.”

Almost every hand went back down.

β€œAs you can see, people like helping you. When you ask for help, you’re making them feel good, even if you don’t like asking.”

I’ve genuinely forgotten the rest of the presentation but I won’t forget that.

@chris Oh no!! Well, I hope you manage to get the game at some point :) It's on my wishlist too πŸ˜‚

All right, looking back at the fight against the boss yesterday, it was not actually as impossible to read the moves as I said before. Still, the rest of the points hold. Some attacks have virtually no telegraphing or reaction window, and the thing about being killed with very little effort still hold.

But yeah, in the end I managed to beat the thing... In good part due to mere luck, some attacks' hitboxes just flew millimetres away from my character, with no involvement of skill whatsoever.

Still, I'll play this game on launch, most likely.

#Nioh3

2025-06-10

Ah, I finally encountered my main issue with Team Ninja's game design: The bullshit bosses.

I've reached the final boss of the Crucible in the #Nioh3 demo and... it's a mess. More often than not there's so much shit on screen that it's almost impossible to read what's going on.

Also, making one mistake often means you'll be stun-locked for a moment and get hit another 2-3 times, and bosses are so strong that in half a dozen hits (at best) you're dead. And they've added a mechanic where, when you get hit by enemies in the Crucible, your max HP is reduced. That limit disappears when you are the one hitting the enemies. So every time the boss kills me I have to go on a small trip, hit a regular enemy a few times, then rest in the bonfire to get my HP back, and only then try again agaist the boss.

2025-06-10

@chris if it's like the other Nioh games, yes, multiple guardians will have different elemental affinities and it will be a layer of the build to approach different enemies.

I'm having a lot of fun with thia demo! All the mechanics that they've added make it quite enjoyable while, at the same time, not too overwhelming since atuff is introduced at a nice pace.

Did you play Rise of the Ronin? I haven't, but I understand it's also a Nioh-like in an open world...

2025-06-10

@chris There is an option for that! One of the skills (to select in the shrines) is ”Resolute", costs 0 skill points, and changes the triangle behaviour: "Press quickly to maintain your current style and perform a Burst Break. Press and hold to change styles with a normal Style Shift".

Although honestly, it should be an option in the configuration, not a skill...

2025-06-10

The tutorial boss in #Nioh3 was quite straightforward... If only I managed to stopmyself from trying to parry his attacks, considering that the parry wasn't unlocked yet! But still, the action of parrying red glow attacks with the style change is a neat mechanic, and I'm enjoying the demo quite a bit!
