The problem is that this is not a civil disagreement. This bill had no business being debated in parliament, and zero - I repeat ZERO chance of getting a second reading, let alone being passed. How it got in front of parliament is a bit of a story, but its reading has given air to bad-faith racist arguments that most of us thought were dead and buried decades ago.
It had no chance of being passed and it wasn't, but it acted as a dog-whistle to the NZ equivalent of MAGA and the rest of us are fucking FURIOUS that it was allowed. The day after the Te Pāti Māori protest my workplaces were buzzing with admiration for them: we shared their outrage, and we still do.
