Not everyone agrees-
Who do you blame for almost all non-consumable goods becoming #enshitified?
I use the term loosely to cover things like:
* #designedObsolescence
* no wiring diagrams or tech info for appliances
* short warranties
* non-replaceable batteries
* closed-source software
* IoT (aka IoS: internet of shit)
* #CAPTCHA
* cookie popups
* #walledGardens
* etc.
@old_hippie You have to realize that Hitler was democratically elected. People thought the right-wing nutters were better for jobs. Same reason the GOP took power in the US.
Cambridge Analytica, #Facebook, and #PeterThiel seem to have proven how easy brains can be manipulated at a large scale.

Musk called for eliminating taxpayer funding for NPR, claiming that they should be able to survive on their own.
We should eliminate tax breaks for religious institutions. They should be able to survive on their own.
We should also eliminate all tax breaks for all for-profit corporations.
American citizens should be granted shareholder status in all extractive- industry companies, including timber, coal, oil, gas, mining, etc. Profits derived from public lands should belong to the public.
@valpackett @gyptazy Building your own train is an uphill battle for sure because where will you build the tracks?
I would really fucking love it if someone would quietly build their own train in their garage. Then one night quickly bolt down tracks from their home to the grocery store while everyone is sleeping. Then the next morning only cycles and trains can use that road. I would love to see that for sure.
@gyptazy In fact thinking about building my next washing machine. Because the garbage in stores now is designed for obsolescence and designed to snoop on me (wifi w/vulns included), & designed to give control to a central authority.
Oh, you didn’t pay your Amazon bill? And you expect your washing machine to keep working?
I asked a salesperson to show me the *service* manual for a new machine they were selling. They could not handle it. So I would be a fool to buy one.
@gyptazy That difference is b/c historically it’s hard to fuck up a car particularly when it has a simple task of just moving around. In the IT world there are countless ways that ppl have figured out how to fuck up.
But okay, cars soon.. cars are starting to get enshitified with surveillance, garbage tech & I guess cars in the past 20 yrs already suffer increasingly from anti-repair protectionism, etc. So we should think about building our own cars in pursuit of liberation/independence.
@charette Well I think “done” in your part of the world likely differs in Africa. We normally consider a car totalled when the cost of making operational exceeds its market value as compared to other options on the market (and the cost incorporates labor and materials).
In Africa they probably have endless cheap spare parts from huge junkyards and copious cheap labor. They will probably rebuild the engine if needed.
Anyway, I cycle and I’ve been out of the loop on EV models since they emerged.
@morebento
I “cancelled” ¹ #Amazon ~15 years ago. Not because of where their HQ is, but because countless reasons like shit like this:
https://git.disroot.org/cyberMonk/liberethos_paradigm/src/branch/master/rap_sheets/amazon.md
¹ Quoted because i never had Prime, so nothing to cancel. I just quit all transactions with them.
How to find made-in-Canada products: https://madeinca.ca
My Netflix and Amazon subscriptions have been cancelled.
@charette Will you be ditching an ICE¹ car?
Worth noting that old cars are not taken off the road. They just get shipped to Africa where the avg age of a car at purchase time is ~21 yrs old. So they continue emitting GHG under the same atmosphere.
I say that because the best pro-environment move is to /convert/ your car to electric. Then use the old engine as an emergency power generator or something less used.

@geoffdgeorge It’s important to know that if an account is:
"filtered because the account or its server has been limited by a moderator."
Then it’s a kind of soft censorship. That account’s posts will not appear in your timeline & if you have a conversation with that account you will not get a notification (unless they changed that). But if you follow a limited account then the msgs will reach you. So if you send them a msg & want a notification for their reply, then you have to follow them.
@geoffdgeorge Note as well that mastodon.social blocks mg@101010.pl, which is a beneficial bot.
If you are on a less controlling node, you can follow that bot & it will programatically follow you back. Then if you post or boost a link to a Cloudflare site, it will respond with a DM to inform you.
The way mastodon.social blocks it is deceiving. They make it appear as if 101010.pl is censoring their own user, but in fact it’s mastodon.social.
@geoffdgeorge I have several accounts. One of my accounts was limited by mastodon.social. I don’t think my posts could generally be regarded as extremism or anything along those lines. Someone with admin power at mastodon.social simply did not like my ideas. Just to give you an idea of how sheltered you are there.
@PaulaToThePeople @j_s_j lack of foresight is much wordier than myopic. I don’t believe myopic has the effect you think it does. With blacklists there is a subconcious element that black=bad coupled w/a long history of a stigma against black ppl. I’m not convinced that someone w/short-sighted eyesight would experience the slightest of subconcious impacts of short-sighted thought being somehow tied to their condition.
Even condemnation of ”blacklist” is a borderline stretch b/c it’s understood.
@PaulaToThePeople It’s obviously on me to justify my expressions to the extent that I care to. But the thesis (the summary statement) of a longer expression obviously needs a short way of expressing unforesightful.
@PaulaToThePeople @j_s_j
The concept of declaring an idea as lacking foresight is extremely important. To deny such declarations regardless of wording would be an attack on expression itself.
It’s particularly important b/c *most* decisions made that affect large numbers of ppl suffer from lack of foresight.
If I call out an idea that lacks foresight & the idea pusher feels insulted - not by choice of words but by my idea, that’s not my problem.
