@boxyrobot Pure luck, I found it in the local classifieds not far from me and immediately picked it up for not all that much.

I too was absolutely stunned at the condition of the receiver. Not a single scratch on it anywhere. One bulb is burnt out and there is some loose dirt on the bottom of the FM scale window, but that should come right off when I remove the front.

New full restauration project: Denon GR-535 receiver. It's a rare model that was made from 1977 to 1979. An absolute beast weighing almost 20kg it is defying the 19" dimensions of most more modern stereo components. I think it's very beautiful and deserves a full recap and replacement of all bulbs. #vintagetech #hifi #audio #electronics

A huge receiver with a silver front, an FM scale and three big knobs for tuning, volume and input select. To the left there are two instruments showing signal strength and tubing. It looks very elegant and minimalist. The same receiver, but with the hidden controls exposed behind an aluminum flap.

I love this distinction made by @emilymbender

I appreciate this piece, but I want to correct the record on one point. I don't talk about LLMs as making "collages" but rather as making papier-mâché, and the difference matters!

When an artist uses materials with text on them to create a collage, it's natural to assume that they chose the materials in part for the meaning of the text they include. Papier-mâché, on the other hand, uses paper (usually newsprint) simply for its physical properties. The text is incidental.

I use this metaphor to highlight, yet again, that LLMs don't work with the meaning of the text they process & extrude -- just the form.

The 1084 is now also fixed. It needed a new flyback. I happened to have one of the HR Diemen replacement parts around. It was a pain to install, because the pin spacing was every so slightly off. For one pin, I even had to drill a new hole.

But now it works again and is reunited with its computer 🙂

A Commodore 128DCR (metal case) I recently aquired, cleaned up and repaired: The VIC IIe was intermittent, so it had to be replaced.

It also came with a 1084 monitor that I have yet to fix as it is supposedly not working.

A Commodore 128D: On the main unit that looks like an Amiga 1000 with a 5,25" floppy drive, there's a Sanyo "PAL Color Display", in front of the computer is it's seperate keyboard. On the monitor there's the opening scene of the Commdore 128 enhanced modern port of Eye of the Beholder.

This week I lost my beloved cat Kaori. She was probably run over by a car. I found her by the side of the road with a smashed in head. These images will haunt me forever.

I've actually never wanted a cat, I thought I was a dog person. My wife and kids surprised me by buying one. I was kind of upset. That all vanished the second I looked into her bright orange eyes. We've been insperable since.

Kaori, thanks for the time we spent together. I love you. I don't know how to live without you yet.

@unknown8bit I've been a massive Funkstörung fan since Appetite for Disctruction, so I immediately ordered a tape when I saw this. Delivery took a bit longer than expected, Michael was very sorry about that and put in "a bit of extra stuff".

I'm blown away...

Three 12", a 10" picture disc, a vinyl album, two CDs and the tape I ordered.

I explained that yes, you could probably say that reception was fine, but the sound quality was really bad. I included the recording from some posts earlier.

After some hours, the errors suddely disappeared:

Email in German which roughly translates to

Dear Mr. Paschke,

Thank you for your feedback and the accompanying recording.

Our colleagues were able to identify and correct a fault in the broadcast feed.

Thank you for listening attentively and we wish you continued enjoyment of our radio programs.

Sincerely,
Your Technical Support Team

According to the manual, this is in the "very good" range.

Moreover, the artifacts sound very digital to me. Digital clicks and even a complete dropout with 20ms of missing samples. We all now this from bad conference calls. Could it be that there's a problem at the radio station!?

Chart showing various oscilloscope patterns. A completly flat line is ideal, the one I saw "very good" and various degrees of lines slanting to the right are worse and worse.

Multipath reception problems? Why yes, this receiver has a connector on the back where you can connect an oscilloscope to check for bad reception. This is how that looked.

2025-04-30

I tried all the stations and they all sounded fine, but one of the bigger radio stations in my area just sounded way off. There constant clicks which can happen with bad reception, but are usually accompanied with white noise and other signs. Besides that, signal strength was very good and there were no multipath reception problems.

After repairing the fault in the power amplifier of the Revox B780, I set out to thoroughly test it. It didn't go as expected. #vintage #hifi #revox #fmradio 1/x

@colin_mcmillen Thanks, enjoyed it very much on my IIgs.

And then there's the access time. I'm not really sure if that's caused by more bad caps or if it really was that bad to begin with. But it's hilarious. Like an elevator! Going back is of course only possible because I created a program with the fist and last track and activated repeat.

Much to my surprise, after replacing the caps in the PSU, the player just works!

2025-04-22

Unsurprisingly, this get quire hot and that's probably the cause why all the caps were cooked.

The PSU after recapping. On the back, there are 5 voltage regulators bolted to a massive heat sink.

There are so many linear voltage regulators in this thing...

After 42 years and considerin the symptoms, it seemed like a good idea to check out some caps. They were a total disaster. All caps in the PSU had to go, with high ESR readings and at most half their rated capacity left. Some just read open.

Some Philips brand caps on the bench, ranging from rather bulky ones with a 35V / 2200uF to small 16V/10uF ones. These were all bad and had to be replaced.
