Hey guys, I am currently in the market for an entry-level tech role. I would be good for a level 1 help desk or service desk role, any sort of computer repair role, or really anything outside of programming that involves networking and hardware. I have a Network Fundamentals Career Studies Certificate and a good bit of experience in a homelab setting with multiple operating systems and repairing laptops, desktops, NAS systems, building PCs and configuring network setups for services.

I would also be interested in any types of writing roles or freelance jobs, I am a good creative writer and, given sufficient information about a subject, can write a good article. I would also be interested in writing social media posts or general communications!

I worry sometimes about what's going to happen politically now that we don't really have the baseline level of literacy in our society needed to make a democracy work. What do we do?

This is also a great opportunity to remind you that if you like my work, you can sign up for email updates or support my work financially through the links on my website. I'm aiming for $500 a month as my initial goal, which will comfortably let me pay for power, internet and do a bulk food shop once a month no matter how unemployed I am at any given time.

This week's article: it's largely about how I fixed the performance issues caused by last week's article, which was by far my most popular one and has reached almost 10,000 hits:

Hey, look what I helped make (a little bit of):

@jalcine @anildash I honestly can't help but feel that the tech industry's habit of ignoring any humanist element is downright inhuman. It's the kind of way of thinking that I'd imagine a chemical engineer in Nazi Germany would have to have had.

2025-06-03

@jalcine Goddess, that was bizarre, and I know exactly what you mean. Still, speaking as someone with some expertise in propaganda, the fact that LLM discourse is structured *exactly* like a propaganda campaign is hard to ignore. @anildash

@anildash @jalcine

I mean, I have to ask here: what does good AI criticism look like? I've taken a shot at writing a bunch, but it feels as though the moment I stumble across something decent ("AI proponents are largely dumbfucks playing status games, so what they say about the technical guts of it is suspect at best"), it winds up being labelled as too much of a humanities thing and thrown out on those grounds.

@jalcine What in the world is this guy doing? I just... all I can think of here is "I never want to work on a system architected by this guy"

Practical tools for defending trans people

@sleepyfox It's more just a question of transporting kit, really. I can imagine that longlines would work, but a fly rod might be trouble

Finally, if you want to support the things I'm doing (like my writing), I have a Liberapay and a Patreon that people very kindly support my writing on. This really helps me stay afloat, so if you're keen to do the same, you can do so at the links below:

Outside of work, I enjoy cooking, baking, playing video games, craft cocktails, reading, motorcycling and long walks in nature. I want to do more fishing than I do, but that's hard to effectively do on a motorcycle.

I'm relatively capable of being social most of the time, but every so often I burn out and lose my mind a little.

2025-06-02

My current work is a mix between writing, which I get a small but significant amount of income from these days, DevOps and infrastructure mentoring and coaching and the occasional bit of consulting work. It's still precarious, but it's a lot better than it used to be and I actually enjoy what I do, which helps.

I've passed 500 followers on here! I suppose that given that I should introduce myself again: I'm Iris, a Jewish-adjacent trans woman from a Polish family living in New Zealand. I write about tech (mostly infrastructure for my harder technical pieces), social criticism, being trans in tech and LLMs on my blog, which you can find here:

@sorenfox They're a good writer, and well worth following. No idea if they're on here, alas

Pavel Samsonov has written another excellent article, which I highly recommend you read (and no, I'm not just sharing it because he quotes me in it: it is excellent on its own merits).

Well, my hope is that with build-time rendering implemented and load testing giving positive results, the next time a post of mine goes somewhat viral my website will be much more performant:

@ludicity I declined optional cookies and it just failed to render for several minutes
