Wenn schon kein Geld, dann aus den richtigen Gründen

Achtung Binse: Alles um mich rum preisexplodiert.

Ich habe nach Corona spasseshalber den "Pizza-Index" ausgedeutet - meine Lieblingspizza kostete vor 5 Jahren 8.50 EUR, aktuell kostet sie 13 EUR.
Mein Stundensatz war vor 5 Jahren 85 EUR. Und aktuell? Guess what, KEINE 130 EUR. Auch wenn ChatGPT der Meinung ist, dass ich mit meiner Erfahrung und in Frankfurt sitzend, 150-180 EUR nehmen müsste -- abgesehen davon, dass es seit gefühlt zwei Jahren kaum noch Anfragen in Richtung Grafik oder Illustration gibt, ist auch der Sektor "Website bauen" empirisch gesehen tot.
Und selbst mit meinem "alten" Stundensatz komme ich bei vernünftiger Aufwandskalkulation regelmässig in Bereiche, die für meine potentiellen Kunden nicht darstellbar sind.

Sagen wir mal so, es ist spannend gerade.

Und weil man ja immer azyklisch agieren soll, mache ich momentan genau das Gegenteil von "Geld verdienen": Ich verschenke es. Also, ich "spende" meine Arbeitszeit und Expertise in Projekte, die Unterstützung verdienen.

Im Grafikbereich habe ich für das diesjährige "Musik am Fluss" Poster, Flyer und Grafik-Assets gemacht. Als kleines Dankeschön dafür, dass ich das die letzten zwei Jahre schon machen durfte, wo es auch finanziell honoriert wurde, weil es eine geldgebende Institution dafür gab. Dieses Jahr ist das Projekt komplett Eigeninitiativ, es hat sich ein e.V. gegründet und man ist auf Unterstützung angewiesen. Da ich die Rödelheimer Musiknacht, seit drei Jahren in Form des "Musik am Fluss", super finde, spende ich eben einen Teil meiner Arbeitszeit. Falls ihr das auch unterstützenswert findet, es gibt ein Betterplace-Funding für die Veranstaltung.

Im Webbereich helfe ich aktuell dem KAPUT MAG, die Website und Mailgedöns auf einen neuen Provider umzuziehen. Ich freue mich sehr, dass ich da unterstützen kann. Als alter ehemaliger SPEX Abonent und damaliger INTRO Leser ist es mir eine Ehre, mit Thomas und Linus (und hintendran die ganzen anderen Autoren und dem Team) zu arbeiten. Auch dort könnt ihr unterstützen; das Magazin existiert nun seit 10 Jahren und ist auch fast komplett "quasi ehrenamtlich" betrieben.

A propos ehrenamtlich; im Rahmen einer Ehrenamtspauschale unterstütze ich das Frankfurter Autoren Theater (in der Brotfabrik Hausen) mit deren Website und mache da quasi den digitalen Hausmeister.

So, und warum schreibe ich das hier eigentlich?

Weil ich mir wirklich Sorgen mache, dass hier gerade was nachhaltig kaputt geht, und aufgrund des Kostendrucks solche Projekte, ja der komplette (alternative) Kulturbereich, vor die Hunde geht. Selbstausbeutung aus Überzeugung war/ist da schon immer der Treibstoff, der das am Laufen hält, aber was aktuell mit Mieten, Lebenshaltungskosten und so abgeht - ich sehe da wirklich schwarz. Auch für mein eigenes Betriebssystem mit Kleinstunternehmen und Soloselbsständigkeit, wo es eben keine Möglichkeit gibt, automatische Anpassungen wie bei Tariflöhnen zu machen und eigentlich ohnehin schon knapp (un)wirtschaftlich kalkulierte Preise nicht mehr bezahlt werden - wenn es überhaupt noch Anfragen gibt.

Ich wäre dann also mal bereit für das grundlose Gesinnungseinkommen, oder wie das da richtig heissen mag.

@amin I had a conversation with my sister-in-law yesterday about AI and the dangers of the web being flooded with low-quality content and the de-humanization of the web as a whole. I told her about the ideas behind things like the indie web movement et al and your article fits perfectly. It was a pleasant read and I will forward it to her. Thank you for putting it out there.

On 30 April 1993, CERN's Directors declared that the three components of Web software (the basic line-mode client, the basic server and the library of common code) that Tim Berners-Lee @timbl had first proposed in 1989, were to be put in the Public Domain.

We are grateful to CERN and to Tim for this world changing decision which has enabled the W3C community to create open, accessible, international web standards which make the web work, for everyone.

When I was a PhD student, I attended a talk by the late Robin Milner where he said two things that have stuck with me.

The first, I repeat quite often. He argued that credit for an invention did not belong to the first person to invent something but to the first person to explain it well enough that no one needed to invent it again. His first historical example was Leibniz publishing calculus and then Newton claiming he invented it first: it didn’t matter if he did or not, he failed to explain it to anyone and so the fact that Leibniz needed to independently invent it was Newton’s failure.

The second thing, which is a lot more relevant now than at the time, was that AI should stand for Augmented Intelligence not Artificial Intelligence if you want to build things that are actually useful. Striving to replace human intelligence is not a useful pursuit because there is an abundant supply of humans and you can improve the supply of intelligent humans by removing food poverty, improving access to education, and eliminating other barriers that prevent vast numbers of intelligent humans from being able to devote time to using their intelligence. The valuable tools are ones that do things humans are bad at. Pocket calculators changed the world because being able to add ten-digit numbers together orders of magnitude faster allowed humans to use their intelligence for things that were not the tedious, repetitive, tasks (and get higher accuracy for those tasks). If you want to change the world, build tools that allow humans to do more by offloading things humans are bad at and allowing them to spend more time on things humans are good at.
