@HailsandAles Ha. I thought hard—well, maybe not that hard—about yesterday’s question but ultimately couldn’t come up with a clear answer.

Probably Bad Religion’s The New America, or maybe GZA’s Beneath the Surface. They’re both not, like, great (at all), but *I* listened to them a fair bit as a kid, also because I often had to make do with what our local public library had on offer, so 🤷

It happened: the Trump regime just deleted NOAA's climate information site climate.gov, which was a great global resource.

@brandoncarey There’s an S3 Uploads plugin somewhere that lets one move all uploads to an S3-compatible storage bucket. I’ve used Scaleway for—in my case, but I also didn’t really need it—€0.03/month. Does require some command-line trickery to actually move everything over. URLs can be kept unchanged if you “reverse proxy” them (should not be an issue if you have complete control of said VPS).

I'm adding a blogroll to my website. Finally, after over a decade of blogging, it is more important than ever to curate a list of real content makers. Unless living in the artificially generated AI every-fuckin-thing realm is your thing.

@elexia @wwahammy @peter_sc @spiralganglion I’d even go as far as saying that in most Germanic languages compound nouns are written as a single word, and that English is the odd one out.

Although it’s disturbingly common to see random spaces inserted also in Dutch compound nouns (which I find tends to make them *more difficult* to read), a symptom of a broader phenomenon sometimes dubbed “the English disease.”

@jan That said, I _do_ parse (my own) posts _on save_ in order to determine precisely their (implied) post type! Because I don’t want to have to do so each time a Fediverse server fetches one of my posts, and I _have to_ let them know if a post is a reply (or like, or repost). The irony.

2025-06-20

@jan I mentioned the bookmarklets, didn’t I?

A dialog of sorts that would accept a URL and produce _even better microformats_ (than a simple bookmarklet ever could) would be kinda cool, too.

Kind of like IndieBlocks’ Reply, Like, and so on blocks. Minus the blocks, of course.

I _could_ do meta fields instead, like the Post Kinds plugin for WordPress. Heck, even “raw” meta fields would be fine. But I’d much rather imply a “reply” or whatever from the exact mf2 I have. (Yes, said that already.)

Was thinking I should maybe distinguish between actual notes and replies. The way I used to, before I moved to WordPress and a block theme some two or three years ago. Have my notes section again look more like, you know, Mastodon.

Maybe I should move my “bookmarks” into a section of their own, too. Create my own little Delicious clone.

I initially decided against “explicit post types” because, well, post types, as far as “social readers” are concerned, are anyway implied by posts’ microformats. (Technically, an article, note, like or listen on this site, regardless of its URL, could be … anything.)

But … I already decided most people probably don’t care about my “listens” or “likes” … and moved them into a corner of their own. So why stop there?

Speaking of microformats, half my bookmarks should probably quotations instead—but then again, who’s keeping score?

Speaking of microformats, I recently learned about implied properties. Like, here’s me carefully, or so I thought, marking up a reply context, only for microformats parsers to, well, assume things.

So, yeah, despite me working on things like automatically adding microformats to just about any modern WordPress theme, and having a thing for semantic markup in general, I’m not entirely sure they’re it. My money’s on ActivityPub.

As far as I’m concerned, and Mastodon (and other social media applications), replies are notes. So I wouldn’t even be changing … very much at all. URLs would stay the same. Just thought it’d be nice to have them a little less in your face.

Also considering collapsing these little microformatted reply contexts—the introductory paragraph at the very start of this post (when viewed in a feed reader, or direcltly on this site, that is)—to just an “@-mention,” at least visually.
