For me it is difficult to distinguish between Xylocopa violacea and Xylocopa valga. But in this photo, this Xylocopa bee shows the back of the thorax so yellowish that it looks like another variety (Xylocopa pubescentes, Xylocopa virginica?) It would be very strange because the photo was taken in Valencia at the end of April.
Is there an entomologist in the room?

Found in a felled tree. I think it's cicada larva. The black thing is the pupa case.

Cicada larva?

After a whole week (wow, time flies) and much ado... one of the most amazing butterflies I've ever seen. The photo doesn't do the color justice!

Sheridan's Hairstreak (Callophrys sheridanii) on myrtle/donkey tail spurge (Euphorbia myrsinites)

New on Entomology Today: In July 2025, the Columbia Gorge Museum will host "Insects, Spiders, and other Friends," a week-long day camp for 6-to-9-year-olds. The program received a grant from the Chrysalis Fund, which fosters the future of entomology by supporting classroom projects and programs that teach K-12 students about insect science. #entomology #insects #STEM #education entomologytoday.org/2025/05/02

Part 2 today focuses on what I call the 'flatties' from last night. They are flighty little things that do not like to pose (unlike the chunky 'fatties'). Four super visitors.

1) Maiden's Blush (top left)

2) Bloxworth Snout (top right)

3) Seraphim (bl)

4) Least Black Arches (br)

Earlier this week I noticed that one of the Georgia mason bees (Osmia georgica) at the front-yard insect hotel had capped off her nest. They use masticated leaves and nectar. Not sure what the white things are. She's since moved on to another paper straw. So busy! #InsectHotel #BeeHotel #bees #insects #pollinators #osmia

Hordes of midges are back, a sign of a healthy ecosystem. Midges (chironomidae) do not bite. If caught in a swarm, close your mouth. Midges can get attracted to light at night. If you leave a porch light on for example, this could be drawing them closer to your home. Make sure your windows are shut or that you have screens on your doors, patio doors and windows. thestar.com/news/gta/swarms-of

A sweet, cuddly bee fly (Bombylius major) on a daisy. I love these fuzzy little needle-nosed cartoons.

A dark, very fuzzy insect is sipping from the florets of a daisy, using a long needle-like proboscis. At first glance we might mistake it for a bumblebee, but it's really a bee-mimicking fly. Its body is a chubby bulb attached to its needly nose. Its wings are spread wide. Their front surface is solid dark brown, but their back half is transparent. The fly clings to the flower with thread-thin legs. Its eyes are soft dark brown balls, concentrating on the tasty snack.
