One thing that's _ugh_ about setting up a new instance and moving to an account here is I have to start over again from scratch with followers. I didn't have a ton to begin with, but still…ugh.
The "business model" (if any) and development model of Mastodon vs. App.net (may it rest in peace) is radically different…however I see them as both fulfilling the same important need on the web: aligning the goals of a social network with the needs of its community, rather than the actual paying customers of nearly all proprietary social networks: advertisers.
Mastodon is nothing without the community. And I *love* that.
@jsnell I'll take your 60 foggy degrees! It's been so hot up here in Portland and the smoke from multi-state wildfires is really getting to me. Oh mist, how I have missed thee...
@dmoren Maybe a UI preference for no-animation-avatars can be added?
Oh yeah, it's happening: https://jaredwhite.com/podcast/12/

Also I'm from Toronto.
Say hello!!!
@cpmcmahon that sounds hugely interesting! (the PhD research)
Do you blog about any of that?
@cwoodley corgis are the greatest!
@jalcine Bushmaster Web Development — I like the sound of that!
I'm a huge believer that the place where you live and the community you surround yourself with shapes who you are. I moved to Sebastopol, CA a few years ago (a popular spiritual retreat destination) because I needed to find my inner "zen" self. I moved to #Portland, OR last year because I needed to rediscover my sense of adventure and wonder. After hiking through Forest Park and over the St. John's Bridge this morning, I'm reminded of how much good this place is doing for my soul!

I blog (yep, that's still a thing) about art, technology, and culture. Sometimes about mindfulness and spiritual matters as well. I've also gotten almost a dozens episodes into a companion podcast which has been a blast to host and produce. I'm a huge proponent of the open web and open source. Mastodon is the most fun I've had since the untimely demise of App.net, and I'm excited to be here. #introduction
@Gargron oh I've done that once. Or twice. Or...
@thomasfuchs I've struggled to engage in interesting conversations here on Mastodon the way I have on Twitter, but it feels worth the effort because Twitter has just gone to hell. Hopefully as the community here grows and diversifies, we'll see a lot of great dialogue. (And one can hope, Nazi-free!)
@songadaymann This is so great! 👍
@davemark Welcome to Mastodon! 👏
I spent over an hour this morning writing an upcoming article for my blog that dives into some painful personal history, and now my hands are shaking. I need to go for a walk and eat some protein now!
