A neighbour’s tall white pine came down a couple of years ago. I lifted up a section of bark the other day and there was all sorts of squirmy things that would appeal to a woodpecker (narrator: it was gross) so I wasn’t too surprised to see this pileated woodpecker on the fallen pine today.

Me writing up the stuff about Harvard. "Oh, I'm sure a lawsuit will be filed soon." Finish writing and look. Lawsuit filed. Finish edit and get ready to post. Look one last time. TRO already entered. Things move fast these days.

RE: https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:l4edfel22exejp7mewt6f3ky/post/3lpu2a4nrtd2q

The whole thing is just blatant fascism in action: Harvard stood up to the administration, so the administration will punish them every way possible. Of course, Harvard has access to a few lawyers, so it’s quite likely that this will be blocked by a lawsuit in short order. Literally as I was finishing up the writing of this piece, Harvard sued (turns out they know lawyers who are willing to work overnight). Then, as I was finishing up the editing of this piece, the judge already granted a temporary restraining order. Things happen at quite a fast pace when fascism is on the march.

I loved that the identifying passphrase Andor & gang used this season was "I have friends everywhere." It keeps the show's key theme in the audience's mind. We get reminded over and over.

In the fight for freedom we do have friends everywhere. The decentralized nature of rebellion is its strength. We must do the tasks that have been put in front of us, but...we have friends everywhere.

If it thinks you're doing something egregiously immoral, for example, like faking data in a pharmaceutical trial, it will use command-line tools to contact the press, contact regulators, try to lock you out of the relevant systems, or all of the above.

I don't know about you, but I'd find opening my curtains in the morning to be confronted with this quite alarming...

I'd certainly be viewing the contents of my coffee with suspicion.

What is ominous about this development is that it clearly shows the only remaining shelter to be found is in the accidental lee of structures designed in and of themselves to preserve corporate power.

Just remember that every time a group has fought for positive social and political change throughout history, they have been told that what they were doing was pointless, wouldn't matter, and wouldn't change anything.

They have been wrong every time.

The amount of money that the World Health Organization is asking for an entire year in its already reduced budget, $2.1 billion, is what the world spends on its military every 8 hours, director-general Tedros says in his opening remarks at the World Health Assembly #WHA in Geneva.

I always thought these were the best photos of the St Helens eruption that occurred 45 years ago today. Can you imagine being there and seeing that!!!

(Photos by John Christiansen from Mt. Adams when Mt. St. Helens erupted on May 18, 1980.)

Two color landscape photos stitched together one on top of the other. Top photo shows a mountain climber in black with a red backpack and yellow socks standing on a field of snow watching a distant volcano beginning to erupt. The bottom photo, taken perhaps a minute later shows the entire volcano engulfed in ash as the cloud of ash spreads outward. The climber who was standing on the field of snow has sat down with their hand on their head in shock by the scene before them. Their long handled ice axe remains stuck in the snow next to them.

>>Exit polls showed Dan at 54-55% of ballots following a last-minute dash to the top after weeks of trailing George Simion, a hard-right supporter of [America's president] and a eurosceptic wanting to end military aid for Ukraine.

Dan had campaigned on a pledge to fight rampant corruption and to keep Romania firmly within the European mainstream.

If officials results confirm the exit poll reading, Dan would need to nominate a prime minister to negotiate a majority in parliament to reduce Romania's budget deficit - the largest in the EU - as well as to reassure investors and try to avoid a credit rating downgrade.<<

Welcome to a random Saturday in May in California where:
* Over 100% of grid load is being generated by renewables
* The emissions for the grid are net negative if you count exports displacing dirtier sources outside California
* This has been true since around 9:30 this morning

Just another day in May.

A graph showing total estimated CO2 production across CAISO (California’s) grid for today. It is currently negative and has been since 9:10am this morning.A graph showing CAISO’s (California’s) grid generation breakdown showing California is currently producing more power than it needs. Of the current load, 103% is cited as being fulfilled by the amount of renewables generation. Of all generation (including excess sent out of state) renewables account for around 90% with lower amounts from Nuclear (4.4%), Large Hydro (3.6%), and Natural Gas (2.7%). It shows zero use of imports (exporting 3.6 GW), zero batteries (charging @ 2.4 GW) and zero use of coal.

The SF Chron over three generations cheered every move to stamp out, price out, evict or arrest every person or event or organized activity that made San Francisco interesting or livable in any way not fully supportive of the financial, tech or real estate business sectors -- and now it has run a column by Carl Nolte, on Bay to Breakers day no less, at last deploring how dull the city has become.
