I think the disappearance of these kinds of trades feeds the feeling that the modern world is terrible and strange strains of nostalgia that right wing politicians seem adept at exploiting and turning in to much uglier things... without ever bringing back any of the things from "the good old days" that were actually good.

Yesterday I migrated my brothers computer to free software.

He was still running Windows 10 and agreed that "upgrading" to the privacy nightmare of Windows 11 is not an option. We didn't even bother to check hardware compatibility. Being a long-term Linux user myself, I offered my support and advice, and he took it <3

With all of his family using the PC we wanted an experience that is a) similar in terms of UI metaphors and applications and b) generally beginner-friendly. So we went with Linux Mint and a Cinnamon desktop environment. We carefully repartitioned his hard drives as to keep his data safe, set up a boot loader and installed the OS and all the applications he already knows and loves: Firefox, Thunderbird, VLC, even Steam and some games with Proton.

It all went smoothly, and I am happy that now there's another free software user out there. If you're worried about taking this step yourself, reach out to people who can support you. Here are some suggestions:

Saying this as someone who's helped several people fix their Linux installs for what seems to be a new growing and creeping issues recently. Please do not use "AI" to learn how to do things and get commands to use, especially if you've no idea what those commands actually do. Read wiki's, go to forums, etc...but don't use "AI"

The outright wrecking of the scientific infrastructure in the US under the current administration chilled me to my bone. Kept me doomscrolling. But I finally found a way to do something positive, in a small way: I dedicated some storage space and a bit of my internet connection to a decentralized backup of deleted research data.
I am happy to report that @SafeguardingResearch 's torrent swarm now has ca 14 TB storage and a Gbit connection more.
