This story is WILD, and frankly kind of shocking.
(On a side note, this is the first time I can recall ever seeing actual deep journalism from IGN)
I’m sick of seeing budgeting advice that wants people to divide “needs vs wants”. That’s not a sensible model for living in the modern world, in part because it leads people to think of anything that’s not a luxury as a need (or vice-versa, which might be worse)
Instead, try this:
This model helps you prioritize things like food and shelter (essential) over things like cell phone (efficiency), while still making it clear that your cell phone is more important than, say, Netflix (luxury)
Mr Charlie’s, which is a vegan alternative to McDonald’s, has been knocking it out of the park. Their new vegan ‘Big Chuck’ is very good. I’m not vegan (yet?) but I would prefer a Mr Charlie’s to an American McDonald’s at this point. (Malaysian McDonald’s is my weak spot.. so much better than in the US!)
Mr Charlie’s is in LA and SF
The "witches" aren't your protofeminist girlboss ancestors. They are part of a dark and complex lesson about the dangers of authoritarian religion, centralized power, us/them propaganda, mob rule, and the scapegoating of minorities.
Since it's Halloween season, and I'm apparently Medieval-ish History Bill Nye on like three different platforms now, have some information about "witches."
There was never really any such thing as a "witch." There were no "Burning Times." There was no underground pan-European goddess magic cult that was suppressed by the evil Christians.
Many different cultures believed in different forms of magic, both good and evil, and had different names for the practitioners of this magic.
Oh fuck sake Australia
I got a new video segment out about twitter's decline. It's long, but it is coming. And turns out, it was intentional, which I genuinely didn't expect. My thoughts on it are too long to put just in this post, though.
No one like Taylor Swift has ever existed. I'm not a huge fan of her music (I mean, I like it OK when it's not too muddled up by Antanoff), but as a business? She's unprecedented:
"The biggest windfall is headed straight to Swift, who stands to make as much as $4.1 billion from the Eras Tour, according to estimates from Peter Cohan, an associate professor of management at Babson College." (Edit: Gift article link.)

TBH, I kinda...doubt about it so???

Indonesian, to me, has a lot more obvious Hokkien loan words than Malay does.
Like ‘goceng’ (5000) for anything that is cheap coz 5000 rupiah is cheap, ‘ceban’ (jit ban) for 10 000, ‘ceceng’ (jit ceng) for 1000. ‘Jicap’ for 20, ‘jicapgo’ for 25. You wouldn’t necessarily use them outside the Chinese community but it’s well understood. Goceng is widely used, especially in advertising to say that something is on sale.
And of course, ‘gue’ or ‘gw’ comes from ‘gua’ for I.

1. Fritters (dough, banana, salty buns etc) are freshly made and very popular breakfast foods
2. The sign I’ve circled and written ‘veg’ is the word that vegetarians should look out for. It means the stall is vegetarian. Not necessarily vegan. Every hawker centre will have at least one or two stalls with this sign (Chinese vegetarian)
3. QR codes are for cashless payment. Not relevant unless you have a local bank but if you do: $3 off every Friday!

You will see many Chinese people praying at the Sri Krishnan temple. It’s right next to a big Guan Yin temple, and devotees tend to go to both at the same time.
absolutely brilliant that the two greatest #SanFrancisco queer kink festivals overlap this year: Folsom and SF Muni Heritage Weekend. https://www.streetcar.org/muniheritageweekend2023/

Elon is such a cartoonish Bond villain, he belongs in a Roger Moore film. Billionaire that owns satellites, tunnels, vacuum transport tubes, robotic cars, monkey-killing neural research, IVF child horde, influential media network, emerald riches from apartheid South Africa. It’s too on the nose.
