one of my favourites. love the closed eye serenity under all the gilding.

not sure what is going on at the botton of the frame... perhaps just a bad scan? should go back and look at the negative.

@guenterhack :) stay out of the water!
it was more closer to 2-3cm
@guenterhack thought sure i had one that was even closer, but this will have to do!
this shot appeared in a book created by tokyo photographers after the 2011 tohoku earthquake to raise money for the relief effort.

i said, elsewhere, at the time:
"My two shots attempt to show different sides of Tokyo, the grind of living in one of the largest cities in the world, and the calm serenity found in buddhist art. Taken together they hopefully highlight some of the tensions / contradictionsof Tokyo life…"

a rare colour slide film photograph. this temple used to be shaded by huge trees, the lighting was always amazing. tried a couple of different colour films there. provia always tended to cool blue / green tones in low light. unreal, but a good look!
@mattblaze it LOOOMs!
hamburg, 2018.
@LievenSymaeys this happens to me a lot - it's hard to account for what is popular online, and even harder to unravel ones feeling about the time that you took the shot.
kanagawa, japan, 2009. hasselblad 503cw, 50mm CFE ƒ4, Fujifilm acros 100.
even though a while ago, i remember wanting to do something different with the focus.. think it works.
domon ken (土門 拳) is probably my favourite japanese photographer. not only was he a left-wing radical, but also an amazing photographer of buddhist statuary.
for a while i really wanted to try to devote myself to photographing buddhism, but it turns out that in japan it's pretty much a closed world.
did what i could, and will post some of my better efforts over the next few weeks.
浄名院, Tokyo, 2010. Pacemaker Speed Graphic + Dalmehyer Pentac aero lens. RVP50 4x5 red-scaled by accident.
the one time i tried to shoot 4x5 slide film... loaded it backwards! the unprocessed negative is a deep red.
