a small japanese buddhist statue in a pool on sunlight. the statue is wearing a red gape, which is very vivid in the sun. offerings are places in front of the status.

not sure what is going on at the botton of the frame... perhaps just a bad scan? should go back and look at the negative.

a rare colour slide film photograph. this temple used to be shaded by huge trees, the lighting was always amazing. tried a couple of different colour films there. provia always tended to cool blue / green tones in low light. unreal, but a good look!

domon ken (土門拳) is probably my favourite japanese photographer. not only was he a left-wing radical, but also an amazing photographer of buddhist statuary.

for a while i really wanted to try to devote myself to photographing buddhism, but it turns out that in japan it's pretty much a closed world.

did what i could, and will post some of my better efforts over the next few weeks.

the one time i tried to shoot 4x5 slide film... loaded it backwards! the unprocessed negative is a deep red.
