People tend to have a mental model where a system is stable until disturbed, far more often than they have one where the system is balanced because it is constantly intervened with.

The latter is a more useful approach to thinking about complex systems.

To everyone who dismissed Pixelfed because it lacked a mobile app:

Great news - we now have an official app, and true to our values, it's fully open source.

The wait is over.

This is the Bitcoin-on-a-hard-drive-in-rubbish-dump case report

bailii.org/ew/cases/EWHC/Ch/20

Highly impressive and convincing reasoning by the judge on each point, especially the complex trusts arguments.

In particular: Judge absolutely correct that ownership of the Hard Drive transferred to council when delivered to the dump.

Rightly struck out.

But the black bin bag situation comedy in paragraph 15 had me howling.

Agreed with everything @kevinriggle wrote here. Another angle on this to try with people who simply do not understand what software engineering •is•: “What’s the impact on the other 7/8?”

AI can generate code fast. Often it’s correct. Often it’s not, but close. Often it’s totally wrong. Often it’s •close• to correct and even appears to work, but has subtle errors that must be corrected and may be hard to detect.

Also watch out for norovirus, that one is HORRIBLE to get even if it's not a hospitalisable case.

lol i feel like fosstodon people lack self-awareness, for some reason

but anyway, thanks for affirming my point for me in the most absurd way possible

screenshot of two posts in a mastodon thread

The first post reads: spending more time on bsky is really making me realize how much of an ubernerd space mastodon is. And how exclusionary it is unless you happen to be a (white!) ubernerd.

As an ubernerd, there's obvs a certain amount of comfort I experience here, but honestly, I also really like talking to normal fucking people. Or people who are weird in a different way than "hello have you considered from github to gitea because freedom?".

The second post reads: @zkat @uncomfyhalomacro I need to intercept, please do not switch to gitea - it's just open core. Switch to e.g. Forgejo.

American football shoulder pads and helmets are the perfect recipe for a broken neck. That heady combo of safety equipment giving a sense of invulnerability plus rigid stuff all around causing the neck to be a crumple zone. Either add in neck braces, or just grow up and accept a broken nose.

I bet my girlfriend that this picture of our cats could get 10 billion boosts on Mastodon.

She said she doesn't believe me. She said there's only 15 million accounts on Mastodon. She said there aren't even 10 billion people on Earth. She said it concerns her that I struggle to comprehend large numbers.

Let's prove her wrong everyone. Boost away and show her just how awesome the Mastodon community is.

My wife's work has a meeting called Quality Improvement Meeting. They refer to this as the 'Quim' meeting, and this will never not be funny for either me or her. She tells me they even sometimes talk about a "deep dive in the quim". Incredible.
