We find that GPT-4 and DALL-E 3 impede queer artists making through through content moderation systems, social biases and stylistic biases
At the same time, our participants still found ways to work around and make use of these highly normative technologies
🏳️🌈🎨💻📢 Happy to share our study of queer artists’ experiences engaging with and contesting GenAI
Looking forward to presenting this work at #FAccT2025

Our DUB REU summer internship program for undergraduates is open again for applications! It's ~9 week paid, paired with a DUB faculty member and hosted at UW to work on HCI research, broadly construed.
Deadline 1/31.
Please share with your students! https://dub.uw.edu/reu.html
received a notification that my Nature piece on Open Source AI is now up online!
ironically, however, it is not open access, and is closed behind a paywall. I've emailed to point out this irony, and am hoping they see it too :)
if you are (or know) an undergrad interested in HCI Research, apply to the CMU HCII REU program!
we pay you to get research experience over the summer!

@andresmh ooo I’m not at CSCW this year but that’s great news!
I really wish ACs made sure that reviewers cited their sources.
If a reviewer is going to claim a work lacks novelty because it is too similar to prior work, they should be obligated to include citations to support their claim.
PSA for anyone trying to travel to Costa Rica for #CSCW2024 with a green card that has a notice of extension (I-797C): the embassy's website has contradictory information.
Here's the truth: You need a visa b/c Costa Rica does NOT recognize the extension letter.
Do NOT risk deportation.
🌟 New paper alert! 🪩
Our paper “Building Solidarity Amid Hostility: Experiences of Fat People in Online Communities” is out and will be presented at GROUP ‘25!
So much care from @jordant, @katta, @cfiesler, and I went into it! 💜
Read it here: https://arxiv.org/abs/2410.04614
Check out the preprint for a paper that will be published at #CSCW2025! “Whose Knowledge is Valued?: Epistemic Injustice in CSCW Applications” by Leah Ajmani, Jasmine Foriest, @jordant, Kyle Pittman, me, and @michaelann. I’m really proud of this one, even though I only had a small hand in it.

This project has been many years in the making and ended up becoming a process story looking at the implications of different ways of researching "marginalized users"
📢🏳️🌈 Excited to share our work “Carefully Unmaking the ‘Marginalized User:’ A Diffractive Analysis of a Gay Online Community.” (w/ Wesley Deng, Ken Holstein, Sarah Fox, and Haiyi Zhu)
How do we keep doing CS research that isn’t AI? https://asbruckman.medium.com/surviving-the-ai-summer-64626e5547e3
Report from #Atlanta, police brutally suppressed attempt to set up encampment at Emory college - a campus where protests have been ongoing against Cop City.
Atlanta Community Press Collective reporting that "Police have deployed tear gas. There are also reports of tazing and rubber bullets deployed against the protesters on the Emory quad." Reports of around 20 arrests.
I'm excited to be speaking at All Things In Moderation, happening May 15-17. The event is based in Australia, but talks and panels will be recorded so North Americans who want to participate don't have to worry about missing middle of the night sessions!
And the best thing is that a portion of the proceeds are being donated to the Kenyan Content Moderators' Union
This story is an example of about five different things that I hate so much about the intersection between chatbots and the internet. https://www.404media.co/facebooks-ai-told-parents-group-it-has-a-disabled-child/
Aisha Sobey and I wrote a paper about the harms of using BMI in health tech, and it's been accepted to #FAccT2024 🎉
