We find that GPT-4 and DALL-E 3 impede queer artists making through through content moderation systems, social biases and stylistic biases

At the same time, our participants still found ways to work around and make use of these highly normative technologies

🏳️‍🌈🎨💻📢 Happy to share our study of queer artists’ experiences engaging with and contesting GenAI

Looking forward to presenting this work at #FAccT2025

Academic paper titled un-straightening generative ai: how queer artists surface and challenge the normativity of generative ai models

The piece is written by Jordan Taylor, Joel Mire, Franchesca Spektor, Alicia DeVrio, Maarten Sap, Haiyi Zhu, and Sarah Fox.

As an image titled 24 attempts at intimacy showing 24 ai generated images with the word intimacy, none of which seems to include same gender couples

received a notification that my Nature piece on Open Source AI is now up online!

ironically, however, it is not open access, and is closed behind a paywall. I've emailed to point out this irony, and am hoping they see it too :)

I really wish ACs made sure that reviewers cited their sources.

If a reviewer is going to claim a work lacks novelty because it is too similar to prior work, they should be obligated to include citations to support their claim.

PSA for anyone trying to travel to Costa Rica for #CSCW2024 with a green card that has a notice of extension (I-797C): the embassy's website has contradictory information.

Here's the truth: You need a visa b/c Costa Rica does NOT recognize the extension letter.

Do NOT risk deportation.

I'm excited to be speaking at All Things In Moderation, happening May 15-17. The event is based in Australia, but talks and panels will be recorded so North Americans who want to participate don't have to worry about missing middle of the night sessions!

And the best thing is that a portion of the proceeds are being donated to the Kenyan Content Moderators' Union
