Well, I never thought I'd write an article about defence, or with "military" in the title.

Who said only military officers can deal with uncertainty? On the importance of uncertainty in edtech data visualisations. With @juliane

Not #openaccess (they wanted over 4000 EUR, "scandalous", said my library), but some copies here and a preprint is on its way.

@juliane Anja Roß just showed me this note to "uncertainty" on the final page ofJulia Stoyanovich and Falaah Arif Khan's “Learning from Data”.

A cartoon in strong colours (orange, yellow, pink), whosing a room, with some people at computers. Text at the top: "importantly, even with all ths adfditional sophistication, it is still unlikely that we'll see perfect accuracy". Text at the bottom: "One of the reasons for this is that there is uncertainty in the world."

at this point i feel like i can pretty accurately predict someone's politics based on their media diet (including youtube and socials). its an indictment on how little we talk politics irl with people outside our own worldviews, and how deeply we absorb political frames from our intimate, personal relationship with screens

1. German crime reporter asks MS Copilot what it knows about him.
2. Copilot falsely accuses him of child abuse, fraud, theft.
3. Copilot asserts “it is unfortunate that someone with such a criminal past has a family” and provides his (correct!) address and phone number.
4. Reporter files a libel complaint, but prosecutors refuse to take on the case: it’s not a criminal offense because no person committed it.

**Results**
There is not just one black box, but at least three different modes of assembling black boxes of machine learning (ML): (1) the black box of ML data, (2) the black box of ML algorithms and trained models, and (3) the black box of ML-based systems in practice.

In conclusion, we reflect on the ways in which particular understandings of ML black boxes afford specific understandings of what kinds of entities, practices and "foldings" need to be researched.

Together with @hen_drik, we wrote a chapter about "Black Boxes of Machine Learning".

**The starting point**
Research on algorithmic fairness, accountability and transparency promotes a view on algorithmic systems as black boxes that need to be “opened” and “unpacked”.

**Our approach**
We analyse what exactly scholars and practitioners aim to unpack when they examine algorithmic black boxes, what they consider to be constitutive elements of these black boxes, and what is “othered“.

These transformations call (on the other hand) for a regulation of LCDP-based systems in organisations with respect to the quality of the solution, its compliance with the broader legal order as well as ethical design guidelines.

We will research the transformative role of LCDP-based systems in organisations from two perspectives: On the one hand such systems increasingly regulate the organisation of work, e.g. by reconfiguring roles and responsibilities in organisations, by transforming work characteristics and workers’ perception of autonomy, competence and empowerment and by transforming our understanding of processes of decision-making.

[Sm-AI-R] will focus on the emergence of a new type of design paradigm for AI systems: Low or No Code Development Platforms (LDCP) for AI. LCDPs such as AutoML are a subfield of AI research that subsumes methods to automate all stages of the design and development of AI systems. As such LCDPs aim to reduce tedious and repetitive tasks in the development of AI systems. They promise to make AI more accessible, in particular to professionals without in-depth AI/ML knowledge and expertise.
