The history of Earth as the length of a human’s outstretched arm - representing 4.5 billion years of time.

At this scale, humans emerged so recently that we could be filed off from a microscopic slice at the very tip of a fingernail.

Infographic by Katie Scott.

DEEP TIME: If the timeline of Earth were mapped onto the human arm, it would begin around the shoulder where the earth formed about 4.5 billion
years ago. Animals originated within the palm, but the myriad forms alive today exploded onto the scene around the first knuckle, in the Cambrian period.
Blocks along the fingers represent the periods that followed, such as the Jurassic (dinosaurs) and the Cenozoic. Humans evolved at a microscopic
slice at the tip of a fingernail. Infographic by Katie Scott from original article in Nautilus.

NEW: Platformer has obtained the dehumanizing new guidelines moderating what people can now say about trans people on Facebook and Instagram. Employees tell me these changes are likely to inspire more violence against LGBT people: platformer.news/meta-new-trans

And in a follow-up questions about whether denying that a protected class violates the hateful content policy, Meta also answers no. It gave these as examples of posts that are now allowed on Facebook and Instagram:

"There's no such thing as trans children."
"God created two genders, 'transgender' people are not a real thing."
"This whole nonbinary thing is made up. Those people don't exist, they're just in need of some therapy."
"A trans woman isn't a woman, it's a pathetic confused man."
"A trans person isn't a he or she, it's an it."
These seem like strange allowances for a policy that begins: “We believe that people use their voice and connect more freely when they don’t feel attacked on the basis of who they are,” and later states flatly, “we remove dehumanizing speech.” It is hard to imagine speech more dehumanizing than to tell someone that they have no gender and are an “it.”

I just hope that Trump’s ineptitude as a strategic leader will prevent some of the worst of his policies from being implemented.

But with conservative control of all three branches maybe he would only have to coast on the work of others.

We're so fucked.

"Our analysis of a selection of questionable GPT-fabricated scientific papers found in Google Scholar shows that many are about applied, often controversial topics susceptible to disinformation: the environment, health, and computing. The resulting enhanced potential for malicious manipulation of society’s evidence base, particularly in politically divisive domains, is a growing concern."

@RecDiffs @siracusa @hotdogsladies Just had my own secret weird thing moment listening to the separate blanket discussion.

I didn’t realize people are meant to sleep under the flat sheet. My spouse and I would always put on the fitted sheet, then the flat sheet and slept on top of it covered by a blanket or duvet.

At hotels I’ve seen a sheet grouped with blankets but I never made the connection that it was the flat sheet we slept on top of at home.

It's baffling to me how Trump could bungle this answer. Out of all subjects, real estate should be in Trumps domain of knowledge! That is the industry he is known for.

It's a shame that so much journalism is gone overnight. I wouldn't say it's the company's obligation to keep the servers running but that is what institutions like the Library of Congress or the Internet Archive are there for, to preserve our culture.

@viticci that would be impossible. As soon as pineapple comes into contact with a pizza it transforms into a flatbread with pineapple.
