Maybe we should come up with a different term to describe what we mean by "Social Capital". Social Capital suggests that we're amassing social tokens that we can then exchange for something else of value — like cash or reputation (which can also be monetized). So much of social media has been about moving the social and the public into the Maul of America, where they exist only to the extent that they follow the rules of The Market.

That's a wonderful image. You feel the full weight of history at Trinity Library. And it speaks to you. Like a gravestone with an inscription that reads like a DM.

I found these photos that I took while in Dublin in Nov. 2013.

This is a photo of Kilmainham Gaol, a former prison in Kilmainham, Dublin, Ireland. It was built in 1796. The photo shows a large open hall with three floors of prison cells accessed by a central stairway, which is in the middle of the photo. This is a photo of Trinity College Library in Dublin, Ireland. It shows a long room with a long glass case flanked by alcoves with shelves of old books and white busts of significant historical figures. This is a photo of a sign in a park in Dublin, Ireland. I really loved Dublin and will return one day. My strongest memory is of the Library of Trinity College. It has a lot to tell us, especially in these (digital) days. I'd like to see other parts of Ireland, too.

My mother, she was Orange and me father, he was green.

Grammarly wants me to clean up that last sentence.

I was in Dublin in 2013 for a Design conference.

Cumulus Dublin 2013: More for Less – Design in an Age of Austerity, College of Art and Design, Dublin, Ireland, 7-9 November 2013.

I stayed an extra couple of days and visited all the museums, galleries, and historic places I could. I kept thinking about how our sons would love it there (esp. Dublinia, the Viking Museum — they were younger then).

I think we'd have to do a house swap and wave at each other as our planes passed over one ocean or another.

Also, "Sorry to Bother You" is a really good film.

Proof that I once visited Dublin.

Also, I don't really mind salads.

This is a photograph of a sign outside a pub in Dublin, Ireland. It reads: "Beer! Because no great story ever started with someone eating a salad."

If we can find enough of us here we could create our own instance. I find that talking to myself leads to fewer arguments (and I always win them, anyway).

The difficult work of sorting stuff out, and getting stuff done begins with open spaces and open conversations. So how can we create these spaces? How can we encourage these conversations? And how can we learn to respond, adjust and alter course in real time, as required?

We need a street we can all walk in, a river we can all swim in, a choir we can all sing in.

I think we’re coming to the realisation that we can’t create innovation any more than we can create a community or democracy — but we can create and support the conditions that might make it possible.

We can learn more from messy, chaotic places and processes than from polished, presentable outcomes.

Maybe the lights won’t just suddenly go out at Twitter, but fade imperceptibly, like in a theatre after the performance has ended, the curtains have been drawn, and we’re still sitting there, looking arounds and realising that it’s time to get up and leave.

@VirginiaEubanks Yes, the narrator made the text come alive. Text can be clear, convincing, and powerful. But the spoken voice goes right to the heart.

I just discovered a timely book, ‘Lurking: How a Person Became a User’, by Joanne McNeil (@jomc). I’m going to order a copy from my local bookstore.

Someone shouted “Musk!” in a crowded Mall of America and everybody is heading for the exits. This is a teachable moment.
