The final part of my #PhD thesis has now been accepted and published in #Microplastics and #Nanoplastics! 🖖🥳📃🎓
I'm proud to have coauthored this study by Lisa Marie Oehlschlägel. We looked at water-air transfer of microplastics during #bubble bursting in lab experiments, with surprising results:

New #preprint: We screened #plastics food packaging from 5 countries for #chemicals and their #toxicity. Sadly no surprises here: Most of them had chemicals inducing endocrine or metabolism disrupting effects. PVC and PUR most toxic.

ICYMI: In a recent study led by Christoph Schür, we demonstrate that #microplastics alone and in combo with non-plastic particles have negative population-level effects on aquatic inverts. Important in an ecological context and rarely studied. #plasticpollution

Hyperspectral imaging is an underrated yet very powerful technique to analyze #microplastics. Check out Andrea Faltynkova’s new work: we developed & validated a workflow using chemoinformatics to identify pristine and weathered polymers. #PlasticPollution

Mayors panel on cities‘ actions on #PlasticPollution with inspiring cases from Mauretania, Indonesia, USA. Local action key if well connected to national and global level. #INC2 #PlasticsTreaty

.@andersen_inger: People are disgusted by #PlasticPollution, so the negotiations of the #PlasticsTreaty cannot be endless and we need ambition. A systemic redesign of the plastic economy is the DNA of the solutions. #INC2

Starting the pre #INC2 with @BCarneyAlmroth and Trisia Farrelly at the Paris climate academy. What can cities do for the #PlasticsTreaty?

2023-05-25

En route to #INC2 in Paris, I re-listened @plastisphere‘s wonderful #PlasticsTreaty episode. Just in case you want to catch up…

This is big. No #embargoes. No #APCs.

"The #EU is ready to agree that immediate #OpenAccess to papers reporting publicly funded research should become the norm, w/o authors having to pay fees & that the bloc should support #nonprofit scholarly publishing models.

In a move that could send shockwaves through commercial scholarly #publishing, the positions are due to be adopted by the Council of the EU member state governments later this month."

#Paracelsus', “the dose makes the poison”, is an irresponsible axiom for #managing #persistent substances that accumulate in the environment. In 1962, #RachelCarson did not know that PFAS could be a poison, and in 2023, scientists are still researching the dose.

Martin Wagner boosted:

Regulations for persistent substances must be #precautionary to prevent their poorly reversible accumulation in the environment, and NOT just #reactionary like the #StockholmConvention, requiring proof of - or damage from - accumulation in the environment.

How to avoid the next Silent Spring? As shown by using #chemicalstripes in @EnvSciTech, #PFAS use started before #RachelCarson wrote Silent Spring in the 60s.

...Since then #persistent chemical pollution has gotten out of control.

What do do?

To improve #management of persistent substances, we need to:

1) improve experimental testing 🧪👩‍🔬
2) develop in silico methods💻🖱️
3) strengthen regulatory options 🔖👩‍⚖️
