I've always hated the term "hobby".

It sounds to me like you're a slave, and when the Master grants you some free time for yourself you can fill the existential void with some pastime.

I'd rather stop doing something if it becomes "a hobby". I do stuff that I like and that I'm passionate about, that I believe it enriches me, somehow. It's not killing time, it's making good use of my time.

In Marxian terms this is "time of work" and the rest is "time of non-work". Everything is planned.

It’s so hot everywhere right now I don’t think you all get the #gravy ty of the situation here.

I think the open source movement is in serious trouble due to generative AI, as maintainers are going to get flooded with torrents of bad code and analysis the longer the AI hype train continues.

It’s exhausting and unsustainable if an entire generation are introduced to not knowing or caring about what they are doing.

@82mhz ah! I feel you. Luckily I’ll be back in London in a few days! Hopefully to a much cooler temperature…heatwaves in London are even worse because houses are made to retain the heat…but we do also have a small portable AC unit ;)

Brace for impact, and stay hydrated!

Air conditioning is not super widespread around here, and often it’s just not powerful enough. There’s also a bit of a stigma towards AC as in it’s not good for your health and so it’s often off in homes.

This feeling of having no escape from the heat slowly creeps in and fuels anxiety, at least for me.

I’m literally waiting for nightfall now to go out and get some relief.

I've been in Rome for over a week now.

I think my metabolism literally changed to deal with the constant heat, every day is well above 30 C and sometimes over 35 C.

It makes me slower, at the same time more agitated and weirdly thoughtful.

Also my diet changed, obviously, leaning towards much more carbs than usual, which is not good. But also, it feels weird to eat high protein foods in this heat, they feel harder to digest.

I'm good, but I can't wait to be back home now, to my routine.

There must be a documented link between high temperatures and people's emotional state. I mean, it sounds kinda obvious, but every time I'm in Italy (well, Rome) during summer I am reminded of the complete lack of cool of the people, the continuous overreacting, the lack of boundaries, the plain un-politness and lack of patience.

It makes sense, try to live all day every day above 30 C. But then it's also just cultural, as in in winter it's the same.

Is it how the environment shapes people?
