The American Public Health Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and several other major medical organizations are suing U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy over vaccines. Also listed as a plaintiff is an anonymous pregnant woman who lives in Massachusetts, where the suit was filed, and who says she was unable to get a COVID-19 vaccination after Kennedy changed the recommendations. Dr. Jason Goldman, president of the American College of Physicians, which is also involved with the suit, said during a briefing on the matter that adults who come to his practice are “hesitant” about vaccines. “They are not trusting the system anymore, and this is a direct impact on the health of our patients, because if they don’t get vaccinated, they can get sicker, they can end up hospitalized or even die."

Maybe Facebook can hire all the other Apple AI engineers and Apple can go back to focusing on what they are actually good at.

Autistic Masking isn’t lying.

It’s survival.

It’s what happens when the cost of being yourself is too high.

When your needs are too much, your stims are “weird,” your voice too loud or too flat or too soft.

Masking isn’t deceit.

It’s what we were taught and conditioned to do to stay safe.

Brits can sleep safely tonight, after the heroic work of the Metropolitan Police. The Reverend Sue Parfitt, 83, a retired priest, was arrested in Parliament Square for holding a sign which read:

“I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.”

Under British law, this now puts her in the same category as an ISIS or Al-Qaeda terrorist. The courts may impose a prison sentence of up to 14 years, to protect the public against the existential threat posed by this very dangerous woman.

The picture shows a white-haired woman wearing a dark jacket over a priest's vestments (with color visible) and carrying a wooden cane. She is being escorted by a police officer, while other police officers are visible in the background.

Inspired by some tech bro saying their algorithm found this writing so awful it couldn't process it. I decided to have a read. It's wonderful. Well written and interesting.

What's more. It made me think about door knobs and handles. Everywhere I've ever lived has had handles. To the point I've always thought lever style door handles were the norm. Door knobs are rare. So rare, that at a friend's house recently. I couldn't work out how to open the front door...

Hello Americans on Mastodon, I know we don't feel like there's much to celebrate this July 4th. It's been a rough several years.

So I want to talk about how we're making history right now.

Why #Ao3 was down yesterday:

(by AO3 user scratch is the best):

For the curious, the reason this happened is because someone placed the two billionth, one hundred and forty-seven millionth, four hundred and eighty-three thousandth, six hundred and forty-seventh bookmark on the site. That's the largest ID that can be stored in a tyoical database column. To fix it they have to migrate the entire database to use a different type for bookmark IDs.

Except, of course, this will take a while, because there are two billion of them, lol.

Good job, guys. You used all the bookmarks. There are no bookmarks left.

Perfectionism isn’t always easy to spot. Most of the time, we're not doing it consciously.

We're not saying "I'm not done, it's not perfect."

Instead, it's often a vague feeling that it just isn't good enough somehow and that we can improve upon it

Understanding this changes when we should be using our strategies.

I think I am going to have to start gently mocking my friends and colleagues who use AI-generated extruded media product for things like article illustrations.

My dude, it looks like ass. It looks cheap and tacky and gross. Is that how you see yourself? Is this a cry for help?

If you are using undocumented immigrants' tax records to find and kidnap them, then it was never about them paying taxes.

If you are showing up at their place of employment, then it was never about them not working.

If you are showing up at courthouses, then it was never about getting them to "do it the right way".

If you are kidnapping women and children, then it was never about criminals.

If you're refusing to give them due process, then it was never about the Constitution.

If you are building concentration camps in Florida to keep them here in cages, then it was never about the border.

If you're spending billions to do this, then it was never about the economy.

And if you're doing all this in the name of a 34 time convicted felon, then it was never about following the law.

The Eight Fallacies of Distributed Computing
Essentially everyone, when they first build a distributed application, makes the following eight assumptions. All prove to be false in the long run and all cause big trouble and painful learning experiences.

The network is reliable
Latency is zero
Bandwidth is infinite
The network is secure
Topology doesn't change
There is one administrator
Transport cost is zero
The network is homogeneous

I've been using a new text-only affordance for actions (links and buttons):

"Verb →" means a navigation
"Verb ↓" means downloading content
"← Back" means navigating to previous page
"Verb ↑" means opening a dialog
"Verb ✓" means submit form

I love it and users love it!

@joshsusser I definitely do it way too much myself.

@joshsusser confirmation bias? I definitely get it, but so many people weaponize this to tear down or ignore otherwise solid arguments, so I am leery of over applying this instinct.

Hooking a lightening-fast code generator into your development process is a bit like attaching a firehose to your plumbing.

Bottlenecks & leaks become acute. More stuff waiting in queues, more bugs, security & other quality problems slipping through into releases. More balls dropped, basically.

The downstream costs - which we're notoriously good at ignoring - rapidly eat away at any initial productivity gains until they more than cancel them out.

Your plumbing won't cope!
