Women braiding their hair into maps to freedom. Sublime and powerful #countermappin. Hiding their rebelion in the plain sight and challenging power with their bodies. Capitalising on being overlooked. How come this is the first I hear of this?

My feature article on "Visualization for the Blind" was just published in the new Jan/Feb 2023 issue of @ACM Interactions. This is a high-level overview of making #visualizations #accessible for #blind individuals, sprinkled with my own personal experiences from beginning in the #a11y space. I even squeezed two Latin quotes in! And thanks to my close collaborator Jonathan Lazar for his mentorship. @thepudding never fails to delight and inform. This visual essay on street name gender distribution got honorable mention in this year’s Pudding Cup but it is my favourite of all. Exquisitely executed eloquently weaves its data story with the poignant message https://ruasdogenero.pt/?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email
OK, weather. Winter is beautiful and welcome but the water in reservoir has been at 1.6 for a few days now. Can we warm up just a tiny bit so that folks can have a proper swim and not only a dip!? #openwaterswimmig #wildswim
In the newsletter: Spoke to the graphics director from 1980s Time magazine about how visualizations worked in that era. He shared one design, from start to finish. https://s2.washingtonpost.com/camp-rw/?trackId=596b02b6ade4e24119ac1a18&s=639dd9eaef9bf67b232507a5&linknum=5&linktot=57
After dropping the kids off at West End I got stuck #railstrike and unable to reach @JoyRiders Christmas do. #SantanderBikes to the rescue! Surprisingly smooth cycling. Very pleased with my getaway ride and had lovely time with the other ride-leaders! #cyclingLife
Had a privilege to be part of an exceptional panel and present my work with ethnic minority women cyclists. Thought provoking papers and the discussion regarding the tension between need for visibility and the protection of invisibility made it memorable and influential experience for the presenters and audience alike @kanarinka @kim #4s
It can't be emphasized enough that @FreyaHolmer@twitter.com is an utterly world class designer-educator, and her beautifully animated new explainer, "The Continuity of Splines"—after more than a year's work—sets a new standard for visual math education. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvPPXbo87ds
Ooh, that's a fresh take! Love how this approach to tile maps allows to keep geographic shapes intact. I might steal it at some point :)

Some excellent cycling infrastructure providing alternative to seascape of cars at Mexico City.
This is excellent move on the part of French government. However, hope that the ban is complemented by a subsidy that will make train tourneys accessible.
@maarten @thepudding Love @thepudding !!!
Super-excited to be putting finishing touches on my presentation exploring use of data visualisation for facilitating knowledge extraction regarding motivations and cycling experience of minority women cyclists.
Using critical cartography and feminist theories we visualize driver’s View from Within as a counterpoint to the platform’s attempted optimizations of urban space. The maps of the platforms are not the only maps for how drivers see, navigate, & negotiate urban space 3/n
The Pudding is on Mastodon! @thepudding
Midjournej AI, is impressive and almost bewitching. However, I find questions as to what is art and what is meaningful in art popping into my mind parallel to images of Jesus on a piece of toast. If it looks like Jesus, is it holy? If it looks like art, is it art? (Don't get me started on the proprietary power of training the AI or the economics beyond funding the hosting)
@netwench Show-off! 🤣 Joking, so impressive and inspiring 👏🏻💪🏻💪🏻💨🔆🌊
