How proactive should an AI agent be when brainstorming with a group of humans? How do humans want to promote or constrain the AI's spontaneous contributions? Please come to our IUI 2025 talk on 27 March 10:20am. arxiv.org/pdf/2501.17258

The impostor syndrome label “implies that women are suffering from a crisis of self-confidence and fails to recognize the real obstacles facing professional women, especially women of color — essentially, [it] reframes systemic inequality as an individual pathology… ‘Imposter syndrome directs our view toward fixing women at work instead of fixing the places where women work.’” newyorker.com/magazine/2023/02

I have heard it said
that we are unprepared
woefully unprepared
for the next pandemic
but look around you
we are not prepared
for the current pandemic either.

The bigger problem with this language is that the term "hallucination" refers to pathology. In medicine, a hallucination arises a consequence of a malfunction in an organism's sensory and cognitive architecture. The "hallucinations" of LLMs are anything but pathology. Rather they are an immediate consequence of the design philosophy and design decisions that go into the creation of such AIs.

ChatGPT is not behaving pathologically when it claims that the population of Mars is 2.5 billion people—it's behaving exactly as it was designed to, making up linguistically plausible responses to dialogue, in the absence of any underlying knowledge model, and guessing when its training set offers nothing more specific.

Responsible AI isn't akin to buy something new for the kitchen.

It's the design of the kitchen that can save you from burning down the house.

reading "Rethinking Standpoint Epistemology" by Harding (1992), and finding heaps of parallels between her ideas and today (e.g., Steven O. Roberts' preprint on racism at perspectives). one excerpt: "Standpoint epistemology sets the relationship between knowledge and politics at the center... empiricism tries to purify science of all such bad politics".

Our lives are inextricably political and to deny 'bias' in science is dangerous.

a screenshot from Harding's essay, the bulk of which says: ". Thought that begins from the lives of the oppressed has no chance to get its critical questions voiced or heard within such an empiricist conception of the way to produce knowledge. Prefeminist empiricists can only perceive such questions as the intrusion of politics into science, and therefore as deteriorating the objectivity of the results of research. Spontaneous feminist empiricism, for all its considerable virtues, nevertheless contains distorting traces of these assumptions, and they block the ability of this theory of science to develop maximally strong criteria for systematic ways to maximize objectivity"

@drmaxlwilson Maybe you or we could do some bag-of-words analysis via thematic dictionaries - like for the 8 affects in the Russell-Plutchik model (using e,g., affect dictionaries by Saif Mohammad or LIWC)
