In response to news of this unethical study, @sarahgilbert, @michaelzimmer, and I have published a statement:

- calling on ethics review boards, journal editorial boards, & reviewers to be extra vigilant to uphold ethics when generative AI research is still relatively recent
- calling on regulators & the technology industry to support transparency for digital experiments conducted on the public

We're grateful to ChangeMyView for bringing it to everyone's attention.

So, how does one fly from #CSCW2025 in Bergen, Norway directly to #AoIR2025 in NiterĂ³i, Brazil?

I am excited to share this pre-print of a white paper we've been working on for a while: "Web Scraping for Research: Legal, Ethical, Institutional, and Scientific Considerations"
With Megan Brown, Andrew Gruen, Gabe Maldoff, Solomon Messing, Zeve Sanderson. We're happy to receive any feedback on how we frame this critical issue and try to derive some paths forward for researchers.

Sorry to share that I won't be at #AoIR2024 in Sheffield next week. Just how things are rolling right now.

Irony (noun): a state of affairs that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often amusing as a result. For example: "Michael was too overwhelmed with duties & deadlines to work on his sabbatical application"

Thrilled to share that the Marquette Center for Data, Ethics, and Society and the Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute are hosting the 2024 AI Ethics Symposium on November 21 at Marquette University. We are lucky to have the esteemed Alondra Nelson and @cfiesler as keynote speakers. A full day is planned, but drop in as you can. Free and open to the public.

There is now the Dataset Providers Alliance (thedpa.ai) and the Data Provenance Initiative (dataprovenance.org), and who knows who else trying to shape how datasets are shared and used by the AI/ML industries. Time for a study! #dataethics #dataprivacy #aiethics

A corpus of 1 million user-ChatGPT conversations, which consists of over 2.5 million interactions, has been released by a research team. The paper details the user consent process, which seems ok, but I'll need to dig deeper into this.

Just pulled up campus bookstore website to remind myself what books I assigned for the fall. How's your August starting?

Another one of those days when I need to remind colleauges/journalists that while I study digital privacy & data ethics, that doesn't make me a cybersecurity expert.

A WIRED analysis of the account, the people listed as Vance’s friends, and, in turn, the people listed as their friends highlights sometimes bizarre and surprising connections. Experts, meanwhile, worry that the information revealed by the peer-to-peer payment app raises the potential for stalking, trolling, and impersonation.

Question for my Comm/Media/Pop Culture scholar friends: is there a go-to reference for an ideal methodology to use when cataloging/categorizing scenes from a television series. Imagine you wanted to track every time a character did a certain thing or a particular event occurred across multiple seasons. I can make up a process, but maybe there's already a gold standard?
