@SeanCasten

I'm happy that "finally" the future many of us hoped for is arriving.

But I somewhat disagree with your characterisation of fossil fuel producers here — it's not that they *can't* compete, it's that they *chose* not to…

They had every opportunity *and more* that others had to reinvent themselves by investing in and developing renewables. Instead of innovating, they *chose* the easier path of suppressing competitors to maintain their profits.

Shame on them.

10. In other words, in 2012 new production benefited domestic producers AND consumers. But today, new production only benefits producers. That's a fundamentally different policy and political environment. And note also that domestic consumption is basically flat for the last 20 yrs.

SARS-CoV-2 needs to be understood as a virus that weaponizes the immune system. Most, if not all of the post-acute sequelae are likely to be downstream of its dysregulation of the immune system. The more it dysregulates the immune system, the less effective vaccines will be at preventing the virus from dysregulating it further, even if they succeed at preventing acute hospitalization.

Some NeXT memorabilia — I suspect it'd be difficult for some to appreciate the importance of user-groups in the days before universal access to the internet, social media, and so on.
The Bay Area NeXT Group was pre-eminent amongst US-based user-groups.

That depends on how you view your "civic obligations”

Personally I believe I owe it to those less fortunate than myself and to future generations to vote, and specifically to vote for those I think will be best stewards of society and the planet now and for the years to come

(And if the best option I have in a given election is a DINO, then they'll still get my vote if they're better than the alternative)

Road death rates per 100,000 inhabitants in the US and Europe

Maps comparing road fatalities between the USA and Europe. Most European countries are either below 4, or 8 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants and year, excluding Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Romania, and Ukraine, that have between 8 and 12.
In the USA, MS has a value between 24 and 26; SC, AR, WY are in the range from 20 to (excluding) 24; MT, MN, OK, MO, KY, TN, AL, and LA have values between 16 and 20; OR, ND, SD, ME, AZ, KS, IN, WV, TX, GA, NC, and FL are in range 12 to 16.
WA, MN, NY, NJ, NA, MH, RI, and DC are between 4 and 8; and the rest has between 8 and 12 fatalities per 100,000 inhabitants and year.

What storage allows is for "intermittent" energy sources, where intermittent may be over the course of a day, or a season, to satisfy needs that otherwise could not realistically be met.

E.g. we couldn't sensibly use *only* solar — we wouldn't have any electricity at night. We can, though, rely on solar+battery.

@jfmezei @benroyce @DavidM_yeg @qkslvrwolf @paninid @Walrus

Umm, storage by definition isn't a primary energy source. It's *storage*.

It's intended to store "surplus" energy produced by other means over short, medium, and long term – hours, days, "indefinitely".

The forecasted needs should be met by generation — solar, wind, tide…

@jfmezei @benroyce @DavidM_yeg @qkslvrwolf @paninid @Walrus

I'm sorry, I'm not sure what your point is, could you clarify?

Hydro is not the same as pumped *storage*. (Context is: Being able to *store* surplus energy generated by renewables.)

FWIW, EVs can also increasingly serve as distributed storage (V2G) to help match supply and demand

@benroyce @DavidM_yeg @jfmezei @qkslvrwolf @paninid @Walrus

And just to be clear, this is an area where IMHO we should "do all the things".

If/where possible develop pumped storage for the future

Look to other technologies for the nearer-term solutions we need to make best use of intermittent renewable sources and transition off fossil fuels as quickly as possible
