I posted the first five comic pages of a new 'Edie Copperpot' story on my website, where Edie follows the path of a cat to a forgotten grove in the fantasy city of Tiega. Hopefully it intrigues you to read more; I'll be adding batches of pages as they're completed!

The Mouse can’t remember when he first stepped onto the boat, or how he got there, or the name of the cursed river. All he knows is that there are always new souls lined up on the shore, waiting to be ferried across, coins plucked from their eyes to pay the way.

STARCASTER (2018)
Acrylic on Palette Paper - 9" x 12"

This one grew out of a splatter of raw umber on a sheet of gray palette paper. I fiddled with it almost as an afterthought and liked where it was going enough that I took a photo before adding anything. Over the weekend I spent time bringing it into sharper focus.

Against a pink background, a dark skinned enchantress is captured in profile mid-ritual. Her eyes focus on overlapping bubbles of light evoked by an elegant gesture. Fingers thrown wide, a soft glow illuminates the back of her hand in silhouette. In her other hand, she daintily pinches a tiny ornate vial by its long neck. Vapors trailing off the tincture waft low in a zig-zag motion. Light warms her face, brightening silver highlights of her headdress saturated in lilac tones. The patterns of spiral along her cheeks seem tangible, so do bell-shaped tassels dangling to her shoulders, but her figure fade to astronomical abstraction filled with 5-pointed stars and many spiral galaxies. Her hair whips wily in silhouette as the background shifts to blue behind her.Progress photo of the figure worked out in detail in raw umber on black. Color would come later. An early photo of the figure in progress with the face defined in silhouette. Taken at an angle, the artist's illustration table occupies most of the photo. The space is a bit of a mess. This is how the sausage is made!

Thanks to cartoonist Adam Koford, I now know that Squarespace allows AI models to scrape your site. 😩 You can disable or "request" your content be left out, but you have to do this manually in the settings. The more you know!

If you're into animation, sci-fi, alien ecologies, and have access to HBO/Max, 'Scanvengers Reign' is definitely worth checking out.

Trinity College Dublin recently received a collection of more than 50 fore-edge paintings, and they are all viewable in a new online exhibition. Fore-edge paintings are one of my favorite things to show visitors—fanning out the text block to reveal a little scene feels like a magic trick. tcd.ie/library/exhibitions/bin

"Songs arise out of suffering, by which I mean they are predicated upon the complex, internal human struggle of creation and, well, as far as I know, algorithms don’t feel. Data doesn’t suffer. ChatGPT has no inner being, it has been nowhere, it has endured nothing... ChatGPT’s melancholy role is that it is destined to imitate and can never have an authentic human experience, no matter how devalued and inconsequential the human experience may in time become." - Nick Cave

"Both 'Breath of the Wild' and 'Tears of the Kingdom' tell stories using their worlds, yet, more importantly, they treat the dynamic relationship between the player and the world—exploration, survival mechanics, emergent gameplay within a virtual nature—as a meaningful story in itself. This may not be as flashy as a movie or as idea-driven as some novels, but these games demonstrate a fundamental shift in our understanding of where ecofiction might productively occur."

"AI is going to take your job!"

Like hell it is. Try:

"A super-rich capitalist has invested billions of dollars into replacing human creative work with a shitty computer program, so he can pocket more of the profits."

When you stop intentionally obscuring who is doing things and who is benefiting from them, the world starts looking very different indeed.
