I get annoyed at the narrative that all the awareness and work on climate change hasn't done anything. Yes, global CO₂ emissions indeed continue to climb, but we don't know the counterfactual. When I was in grad school, we were on track for 5°C of warming. Now it's below 3°C. That's progress, even if we should do a lot more.

A line chart titled “Annual CO₂ emissions” shows the global carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels and industry from 1950 to 2023. The y-axis represents emissions in billions of tonnes (t), ranging from 0 to 40 billion t. The x-axis covers the years from 1950 to 2023.

The chart presents a steady increase in emissions from approximately 5 billion tonnes in 1950 to over 36 billion tonnes in 2023. Key features include:

A consistent upward trend from 1950 through the early 1970s.

A brief plateau and dip around 1980–1983.

A strong growth trend resuming in the late 1980s.

A sharp increase during the 2000s.

A slight drop around 2008–2009, likely due to the global financial crisis.

A major dip in 2020, attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A rapid rebound in emissions after 2020, continuing the upward trend to a new high in 2023.

A blue line labeled “World” traces these changes over time.

Below the chart, the data source is listed as the Global Carbon Budget (2024), and the graphic is credited to OurWorldInData.org with a Creative Commons license (CC BY). A footnote explains that the data includes emissions from coal, oil, gas, flaring, cement, and steel, but excludes land-use changes such as deforestation.

Well, it finished the fsck, but nothing happened... I ejected the drive and it attempted to fsck again. Definitely dead or dying :(

Back up your backups, kids!

2025-06-21

I think I'll stay up another 30-40 minutes just in case it finishes within that timeframe, otherwise I guess I'll let it sit overnight and see what happens.

C'mon, clutch up fsck lol 🙏

2025-06-21

If something goes wrong I think I'll give ddrescue a try, just to at least get all of the data copied somewhere in case this drive actually is failing (honestly I wouldn't be surprised if it was, it's been in use for at least 3 years).

2025-06-21

Uh oh... just tried reading from my backup HDD and KDE automatically ran fsck on it. It's been running for an hour now, so hopefully it's doing something 😅

If fsck succeeds I'm most certainly copying all of my stuff over to a new drive as fast as possible, losing all of it would uh.. not be fun.

It feels off to wish people a happy Juneteenth when when people of color are under more direct threat in the US than they have been in decades. But I do hope the day brings joy to my Black friends and that fellow white people are prompted to reflect on how we could be better antiracists.

Instead of using butter with your garlic bread, you should switch to Linux. You can set up a virtual machine to try out various distros to see which one works best for your needs.

The @frameworkcomputer Laptop 12 might be the most repair-friendly laptop we’ve ever opened. Seriously. It’s shockingly easy to take apart, and for a touchscreen convertible, that’s rare. It earned a 10/10 on our repairability scale thanks to clever engineering choices:

- Screwless SSD clip.
- Cable-free battery removal.
- Clearly labeled mainboard.
- QR codes on every major part.

We tore it down. You can fix it up.

I’m planning on doing my first Framework Laptop 13 upgrade soon!!

I’ll be…

- replacing my Intel i5-1540P mainboard with an AMD Ryzen 5 4640U mainboard, since Framework will most likely only offer AMD stuff in the future, and it seems to perform better in benchmarks
- swapping out my red bezel for a transparent one (or possibly orange..? Not entirely sure yet haha)
- replacing the input cover, since the touchpad’s starting to get a bit iffy

..and possibly switching to Arch Linux, depending on how I’m feeling when I get my stuff in. I really like Arch, but the promise of (relative) stability with Fedora is quite nice 😅

Sticking with KDE Plasma no matter what though, it’s a solid DE.

@bison Ah, fair enough 😅 that's really annoying, I hope you find a solution soon!

@bison Have you already tried converting the mkv to an mp4 with ffmpeg? Or would you rather it stay mkv?

Happy Pride, Everyone.

Alt txt by : @psil@c.im

@psil@c.im : "Alt text for those who want/need it (could be expanded with visual descriptions of the art). Happy pride!"

Panel 1
Whenever pride month rolls around, people who complain about it always seem to show up, either because they don't like The Gays™
"Why do the gays get to have a whole month to themselves??"
or because "other groups don't get to be celebrated as much" (while not celebrating those things themselves) and I can't help but find it kind of funny.

Panel 2
Because their hate for queer people shows justification for pride to ask be celebrated. This is just my experience, but living as a trans person, especially in this day and age, it's kind of terrifying at times.

Panel 3
Like governments painting trans people as some sort of danger that has to be legislated away and stopped,
"It's not us, it's them! They're causing all the problems you have! Get them!"
When in reality it has nothing to do with the fact that a lot of people's lives just suck, but it works anyway, because a lot of people are miserable, and having someone to blame, to hate, it makes them feel like they're doing something, instead of feeling powerless about the fact that their work sucks or that rent is to high.
