Democrats keep acting like they’re playing chess (badly) against the GOP.

Listen, the GOP is not playing chess. They have flipped the board and are taking a blowtorch to it.

Meanwhile, Dems are like, “Well, a pawn can only move this way, so I guess we’re stuck.”

The top 10% richest in the US are responsible for almost half of all spending in the country

Gift link: wsj.com/economy/consumers/us-e

this is the heat signature of a grotesquely unfair economic system ...

... and, worse, it also makes for a fragile economy

a terrible idea to have so much reliant on so few

A screenshot reading:

"Many Americans are pinching pennies, exhausted by high prices and stubborn inflation. The well-off are spending with abandon.

The top 10% of earners—households making about $250,000 a year or more—are splurging on everything from vacations to designer handbags, buoyed by big gains in stocks, real estate and other assets."

This next paragraph is highlighted in blue:

"Those consumers now account for 49.7% of all spending, a record in data going back to 1989, according to an analysis by Moody’s Analytics. Three decades ago, they accounted for about 36%.

All this means that economic growth is unusually reliant on rich Americans continuing to shell out. Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, estimated that spending by the top 10% alone accounted for almost one-third of gross domestic product.

Between September 2023 and September 2024, the high earners increased their spending by 12%. Spending by working-class and middle-class households, meanwhile, dropped over the same period."

Up too early, upset about a number of things. My brain is so restless and ready for anxiety right now, that it just starts going as soon as I blink awake in the slightest.

It is very exhausting.

But, sigh, there is coffee. And I shall make breakfast. And then maybe rage garden a bit.

Thinking about how, when I was looking at colleges, so many church folks told me to avoid any non-Christian college because of all that worldly knowledge (read: thoroughly researched and science-based). I almost went to a Christian college, but decided on the way cheaper public option.

Took me like three weeks to be so infuriated that I left the church entirely. Of course they didn’t want me to go! They knew I’d find out about their lies.

@scuderiadellaquila Jesus is too woke for them

@isaackuo I’m also in the South, but grew up in New England. Here we also have the whole Baptist schism too.

2025-01-31

@Codhisattva @lisamelton oh absolutely, no argument there. This isn’t new.

2025-01-31

@Leefellerguy But they literally are brainwashed to do the opposite.

@Colman yup! It’s wild.

The things I heard evangelicals say about other Christians would make your blood run cold.

They will absolutely use them for their own good, and then, eat their faces as leopards do.

Because, mostly, evangelicals believe they are chosen, and correct, and everyone else is wrong; even though 95% of what they teach is extra-Biblical and absolute white supremacist nonsense.

It works, though.

I’ve seen some folks wondering why the religious right would deport other Christians, but as an ex-vangelical, let me tell you they are Catholic and for fundamentalists that is not the same.

They openly preach against Catholic “idolators” but manipulate them for political gains. Same for Episcopalians and Lutherans and any “dead faiths” as they see it.

So it’s absolutely on brand.

Remember when Meta was good? Yeah me neither.

I see people are again grumpy that we authors are expressing political views.

Look, I spend zero brain cells ever worrying about how bigots will respond to my queer, feminist agenda.

If anything, my political views will serve as a warning. If they don’t heed it, I hope they choke.

Hello! How is everyone? Anything interesting going on in the world? No? Didn’t think so.

Anyway. What’re you all reading to keep you afloat during this hellscape made reality?

@djohngo what! Yay?

And when I do a BIG thread, I always save some of the best for my subscribers. This week is an absolutely jaw-droppingly gorgeous bodice from 1761.
