#ThreadTalk

2025-04-18

I'm slightly terrified to announce that I will be giving an online "Thread Talk" for the Embroiderers Guild on June 3.

I'm going to talk about the various ways I've developed over the years to help get my ideas "From an Inkling To A Stitch", with examples (probably!) from among the #DreamsOFAmarna, the #MedievalMoversAndShakers, and anything else that helps demonstrate how I tell stories in stitch.

Tickets are available via Eventbrite, and also provide for access to the recording for six weeks after the event.

Head shot of me, a white woman with dark hair, silver grey at the temples. I'm wearing a red polo neck, swathed in a pashmina with embroidery inspred by Nefertiti's polychrome headdress, and smiling straight at the camera.

Fun fact:
#ThreadTalk
didn't entirely go away. I have over 30 "dresses of the week" and lots of other
#fashionhistory
musings over on my Patreon.

And when I do a BIG thread, I always save some of the best for my subscribers. This week is an absolutely jaw-droppingly gorgeous bodice from 1761.

In my latest for @skiffyandfanty I interview @natania about her latest book, Netherford Hall, a queer Regency-style romance fantasy. We also touch on #ThreadTalk and other topics. Please have a look!
"... It is *thrilling* to write. I love watching characters fall in love and question their own selves, and grow into something new. The best relationships can do that. ..."

Some more reviewers weighing in on NETHERFORD HALL.

Bewitching! Spellbinding! I am here for all the puns, intentional or not.

Readers are particularly enjoying the fashion! And that makes sense, of course, since this is the book that inspired #ThreadTalk in the first place.

The #ThreadTalk post from this week is a perfect example of my #fashion #history mantra: question beauty relentlessly.

A look behind a golden yellow muslin gown and the truth of plantation life for one of Maryland's most (in)famous families.

#ThreadTalk is live for patrons! Today we take a look into embroidered waistcoats, and I bemoan the loss of creative fashion whilst waxing philosophic on Oscar Wilde.

#ThreadTalk is up for today. A bit of discourse on Agnès Sorel and her infamous breast. But is her reputation deserved, or was there more to this official mistress?

The Threadtalk Dress of the Week is up, and it's all about one of my favorite fabrics: moiré! It's like part chaos part fairy.

Also describes me.

This week's #ThreadTalk post is live over at the Schmatreon.

A topic near and dear to my heart, it's all about guilds run by women and the lengths they went to keep their power in France.

This ain't revisionist history, baby. It's just history.

Our #ThreadTalk Dress of the Week is on one of my favorite topics: boys' dresses.

Let's smash some gender perceptions with history on our side, shall we?

Patrons, you know where to go!

A young boy in a formal gown, dating 1630. The gown has a high, lace collar, and is made of blackwork embroidery (black thread in a floral motif on a white ground). He has a lace bonnet that looks like a crown, and a red belt. A dog is at his feet, and he carries a lance.

My #ThreadTalk dress of the week article has QUITE the title:

Lottie Barton: Minister of Aesthetics, Smuggler, and Baltimore Designer

That's a lot to pack into one essay, but I'm glad to do it. Even more fun when I get to dig into some primary sources.

Patrons, take note!

Our #threadtalk Dress of the Week is quite the tale: from Scotland to Fifth Avenue, then from the sinking of the Titanic to Asheville, NC.

Let's meet modiste duo, sisters Farquharson & Wheelock, and find out the story behind the taffeta.

This pink gown, replete with pleats, is utterly stunning. From 1900.

The pleats in bubblegum pink satin give a surprisingly modern feel to the gown's structure, but it's a fairly simple gown in terms of its silhouette. The train is lovely, and the stripes of silk accentuate the organic flow of fabric. The neckline hearkens back to the early Victorian period. But fun fact--had two different tops! This would allow a woman to shift from day to evening wear.

Today's #threadtalk discussion is all about the glorious garment that men loved to wear at home.

Our Dress of the Week is all about embroidery, the court of Louis XV, and the role women played.

All inspired by one of the most stunning gowns I've ever seen!

All patrons get a dress of the week delivered... well, every week! Plus a history lesson.

House of Worth gowns have a tendency to be all out in terms of colors and patterns, but I love that this dress plays with the monochrome palette and leaves the details for the tailoring.

Dating from 1873, it's got the silhouette of the times you'd expect but with the high-neck conservatism of the next decade.
