NCEC

Data and analysis for progressive candidates and campaigns.

The NCEC (National Committee for an Effective Congress) is a donor-supported organization staffed by analysts and data nerds. We spend a lot of our time collecting, wrangling, testing, integrating, and analyzing data.

The NCEC was founded by Eleanor Roosevelt and has been fighting for progressive values since 1948.

This is a monumentally bad time for the Republicans to be cutting support for climate monitoring and mitigation. If it's "woke" to keep your eyes open and respond to problems, wake the @#$ up. nytimes.com/2025/06/26/climate

The Iraq war cost $2 billion dollars a week. A week!

I think we can afford a little Juneteenth.

Always money to increase human suffering, never any money to increase happiness and joy.

ICYMI: In September 2024, The Carpentries submitted a proposal for 1.5 million USD to the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Pathways to Enable Open-Source Ecosystems (POSE) Program, and were extremely pleased to learn that the proposal was recommended for funding.

However, we have had to rescind our proposal because it was flagged for DEI content, namely, for β€œthe retention of underrepresented students, which has a limitation or preference in outreach, recruitment, participation that is not aligned to NSF priorities.”

Since we are no longer in the running for this funding, we are actively seeking donors and a cohort of funders who align with our mission and core values and want to support our work.

Find out in this blog post announcement how you can help us by making a recurring donation, or reaching out to potential donors on our behalf, or connecting us with potential donors and program officers, or collaborating with us to apply for grants, and many other ways you can support our mission: carpentries.org/blog/2025/06/a

Very proud of, and sad for, our friends at @thecarpentries for turning down a $1.5M #NSF grant rather than abandon their values. The (illegal) demands that they abandon DEI work were fundamentally at odds with their mission, and they made a hard and principled choice.

Click through for ways you can support them, financially or otherwise.

Q&A from a talk I gave last week.

Q: "What do you think is the biggest threat in cybersecurity right now? Is it post-quantum computing? Is it AI?"

A: Fascism. It's fascism.

Encapsulating the atrocity of umask handling with Python's walrus operator:

os.umask(current_umask := os.umask(0))

This isn't clearly *better*, but at least it's clearly shorter. Without `:=`, we'd need two lines:

current_umask = os.umask(0)
os.umask(current_umask)

Note: The awkwardness is a necessary consequence of how POSIX handles umask. Also, neither version is threadsafe.

@ike Hypothetically, if the 43% of reported results are in counties where Democrats tend to get 51%, they can compare this against the counties that have not yet reported. If the remaining 57% of votes are from counties where Republicans perform 10 points better than Democrats, they can confidently call it for the Republican.

Sometimes groups can get it wrong, but that's usually the exception not the rule.

@ike When calling a winner, groups like Bloomberg will have access to early returns reported at a more fine-grained geography than whole districts or states (often county-level). Using prior results combined with recent polls, they will have a good idea about which counties vote more progressive or conservative than other counties.

This AP tweet is an instant candidate for the Museum of American Fascism. Carve it in stone and put it over the entrance. It should be an enduring source of burning shame and embarrassment for the entire organization, as well as a warning to other media.

AP The Associated Press @AP Donald Trump made a triumphant return to Capitol Hill on Thursday, his first with lawmakers since the Jan.6, 2021 attacks, embraced by energized House and Senate Republicans who find themselves reinvigorated by his bid to retake the White House.
