Today on #Juneteenth, we honour the end of slavery in the U.S. and reflect on the ongoing fight for freedom, dignity, and racial justice.
As a non-American, I stand in solidarity with those who continue to struggle for true liberation—because none of us are free until all of us are. 🖤❤️💚✊🏽
"Juneteenth challenges us to confront a difficult truth: that much of American Christianity was complicit in slavery, and that the legacy of that sin continues in our institutions, our policies, and yes—even in some of our pulpits."
~ Benjamin Cremer
Racism was still being taught in Sunday School when I was still attending church. We were taught that "dark skin" was the Mark of Cain, and that anyone with "dark skin" was inherently evil.
Workers at Chateau Ste. Michelle are proud #juneteenth is a paid holiday in their UFW contract: If we work on this day we will get 8 hours plus what we earn. We're really pleased to work at a company with such respect for people. #WeFeedYou
As a grad student at the College of Charleston, Lauren Davila found an ad for the auction of 600 enslaved people — the largest known slave auction in the U.S.
The discovery prompted a small group to spearhead the creation of a historical marker in downtown Charleston.

Today we celebrate Juneteenth. This day honors the struggle for freedom and the ongoing journey toward equality and justice. Let’s reflect honestly on the past, wholeheartedly celebrate Black culture and achievements, and truly commit to building an inclusive future.
The National Museum of African American History and Culture has a #Juneteenth Reading List for both young and adult readers. I plan to check out some of the #poetry collections. Do any of you have a favorite #book recommendation (on this list or not)?

"Following this [ Skrmetti] ruling, not only are trans kids at risk, but so is the bodily autonomy of any member of any community who finds themselves in the sights of the hard right. Our freedoms are now up for 'fierce debate,' subject to the 'sincere concerns' of those who want to do us harm."

I sometimes wonder what Republicans hate worse about #Juneteenth: The fact that it recognizes the historic crime of enslaving Black Americans, or the fact that it gives working people a day off.
Texas Highways did a nice #Juneteenth piece documenting celebrations over the past 160 years.

Juneteenth is a celebration of June 19th 1865, the day when the last enslaved African Americans in the United States were informed of their emancipation. We reaffirm and rededicate ourselves to ensuring freedom and justice for all on this special day. #Juneteenth #DemocratsAbroad
When did you first learn of #Juneteenth?
I believe I had heard the term off and on for the last 15-20 years, but I’ve only really become aware of it in the past five years or so. If I ever heard about it in school, it was in passing and not something that was on a test.
Celebrating #Juneteenth because none of us are free until all of us are free.
🇺🇸 "#Juneteenth celebrations then, like now, recognize the ongoing fight for human rights and equality and are commemorated through family cookouts, faith services, musical performances and storytelling. Today, Juneteenth celebrates African American resilience and achievement while aiding in the preservation of those historical narratives that promoted racial and personal advancement since #FreedomDay.” - #NMAAHC

If the massive army of *mainly* priveledged, Cis-Het, White 'experts' currently wringing their hands over the "Death of Democracy" had put in as much fucking effort into fighting authoritarianism and punching nazis as they have hand-wringing, maybe we wouldn't be in this shit hole. Or perhaps they could have just listented to those of us in #minority groups who have been sounding the alarm and fightning fo fucking centuries.
I am not #Black. I am not #Latina. But I am a #Queer #Trans Immigrant, and I've not be quiet about the bullshit coming our way. That massive army (mostly) told us we were being hysterical and we should look on the bright side and shut up, waving flags with us because it made them look good. If all of this convenient allyship doesn't show the need for minority stories to be told on days like #Juneteenth, I fucking don't know what does.
Happy Juneteenth to all!
From The Bitter Southerner, here is a lovely recollection of Juneteenth in Houston, background on the important date, and a red drink recipe.
I was assistant director of Galveston's Texas Seaport Museum in the early '90s; it's on Pier 21 in the city's port, likely not far from where the ship docked with the new Union commander arriving with the declaration of freedom in 1865.
