Dan Goodman

I'm a computational neuroscientist and science reformer. I'm based at Imperial College London. I like to build things and organisations, including the Brian spiking neural network simulator, Neuromatch and the SNUFA spiking neural network community.

Just saw an advert for "quantum energy coaching" and wondering if a quantum of energy is more or less than a homeopathic dilution?

@jegp love this vision Jens!

Throughout my PhD I put in a lot of effort in building open-source software, because I fundamentally believe that software is *necessary* for good science.

As the newly elected chair of Open Neuromorphic, I've put elaborated the argument in our newly launched strategic vision for ONM: open-neuromorphic.org/blog/str

If you're trying to sort through your Pocket saves, this bit of Python code might be useful. You export your Pocket data to csv file from Pocket website, then run this code and it will generate a single HTML page with all your unread links sorted by date and grouped by tag.

Fusing multisensory signals across channels and time.

Now published at PLOS Comp Biol! πŸŽ‰ With Swathi Anil and @marcusghosh.

Short explainer thread πŸ‘‡

TLDR, when multisensory signals vary over time, neural architecture becomes important. Biggest not always best.

That last point is something we will be following up on with a new preprint in the next month or so 🀞 with @marcusghosh. Stay tuned.

I know that America is currently unwell and knowing it "theoretically" is one thing, having lots of colleagues and friends professionally affected is another, having our server's admin, one of the kindest, most generous people that I know, physically attacked, and their finger broken, by the LAPD, is another altogether.

I wish @jonny a prompt recovery if that is possible and I am so proud of them for standing up for what is right. I hope more and more people participate in these protests in a non-violent way until the police / army / country finally realizes that it's on the completely wrong track and comes back to reason.

I also feel quite useless from here in the UK but if there is anything that we can do to help, let us know.

@RoRInstitute what's missing from this guidance (unless I missed it) is any consideration of whether or not there are any gains to research as a whole for using this scheme, as compared to gains for the funder. It proposes a scheme where there would be 12 reviews per proposal. That's a huge increase in review burden, and consequently a huge loss in productive research time. Is that offset by improvements in allocation accuracy? How is that measured?

@rwg OpenAlex and Semantic Scholar are now pretty serviceable replacements. Semantic scholar in particular has an excellent recommendation algorithm (something I never thought Google scholar was very good at).

My new piece in Nature Human Behavior: "We need to fight for the next generation of US researchers"

All trainees need 3 things to thrive. In the US, those things have been ripped away. Let's brainstorm and fight to get them back.

@elduvelle yeah I feel the same. 😞

@elduvelle I'd guess there's nothing free that does this without exploiting your data in some way. I just use my existing Dropbox account but there's no built in editing. I also have an Adobe account these days but I guess you don't want to pay for that because it's kind of expensive and not worth it unless you're doing lots of photography.

@jonny sometimes people need a helping hand!

πŸ”₯ Bonfire Social 1.0 release candidate has landed!

Curious about what the fediverse could look like with real community control?

Try out features like custom feeds, nested discussions, shared profiles, circles, and boundary-based permissions β€” then let us know what breaks or needs improvement.

@benjohn yeah me too!

@PeterMotte that's true at some journals, but not the sort that determine people's careers.
