It finally happened. I struggled to write some code in objective-c because I mostly work in swift. So now I’m hopeless in two programming languages.

Announcing: justaqrcode.com.

Tired of "free" QR code generators that are full of ads and trackers, that share your data, and that want to sell you something? Me too. Here's my act of resistance: I made a one-page site that works entirely in your browser to generate a simple QR code. And that's all it does. You can download the HTML page and run it locally, even. Read the source; nothing up my sleeves. Just a QR code.

My offer to you -- I will continue to pay for the domain name and web hosting for it, myself. If you find it valuable, you can pay it back by creating your own useful thing for the world and releasing it for free. Let's take back the friendly web, one vexingly-monetized utility at a time!

I can't tell you why I love them, but I have my office full of those Govee color changing lights, with two more I still need to set up. They're all set to Aurora and I love it.

If you respond to one of my posts with some idiotic and inane retort like, "nope" or "you're wrong," I'm just going to respond with "yep" or "I'm right," and a thanks for boosting my visibility, so... you've been warned.

Atuin is one of those command line utilities that you set up and then forget that its not part of the default shell (until you reinstall your machine and curse that you cant remember its name)

Ctrl+r to search through your history is good, but this makes it so much better, type half a command and press up to search, see an entire screen full of search results at once, not just one at a time.

Tip of the hat to one of my work colleagues for pointing that one out.

NYC is so big that when some small disaster happens here we mostly hear about it from relatives that live out of state and see it on tv and then text us assuming we were nearby. Like no mom I didn't get squished by the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man I was in a different borough

3. While renewables are almost always blamed in the aftermath of major power cuts or grid disruption - and the way they have been integrated into the grid has certainly been found to compound problems - the simple failure of wind or solar power to show up has never yet been found to be the primary cause.
Quick to blame renewables, slow to repent
The context here is that there is a long history of pundits and politicians blaming renewable energy for grid disruption and power cuts, only to be proven wrong.
Here are a few examples (thanks ChatGPT!)
July 2012 - India (world's biggest power cut)
• Claim: Later renewables critics pointed to this as an example of grid instability caused by non-traditional sources.
• Reality: The blackout was due to overdrawing by states, poor grid management, and lack of
infrastructure-not renewable energy.

That makes sense.

I'm not going on Bluesky.

I learned from the past.

I'm not investing my time and energy (and data) again in another platform that could get bought by Elon Musk (or another malevolent billionaire) tomorrow.

the fact that duckduckgo has an AI thing at the top of the search results which DOESN’T answer in character as a duck, or even quack several times between each sentence, is, i think, a shocking betrayal and a demonstration of utmost cowardice

The Void Captain's Tale (Norman Spinrad) - In some science fiction novels starships use something like the Albecurrie warp drive to go faster than light (Star Trek).

Others resort to using hyperspace (Foundation), or wormholes as a shortcut(Contact), a network of fractures between stars (The Mote in God's Eye) or an improbability drive (HHGttG) .

Maybe the navigator consumes spice from Arrakis or rotates off the acceleration vector (Timothy Zahn's Cascade Point) or some hand-wavy shit like that.

In this one the starship is driven across the light-years by a female orgasm, which is just about right. #ScienceFiction #I6

One of the things I love about Mastodon is that when someone needs it, they can just toot “send puppies”, and puppies appear like it’s a magic spell.

I don’t know who needs this right now, but here are my doggos. Can’t wait to finish work today so I can go home and give them pats.
