Antje Boetius is a German marine biologist, professor and director of Germany's polar research hub. She and her team discovered methane-eating bacteria that are allies in the fight against greenhouse gases. Boetius has led several international research expeditions and has participated in about 40 marine biology expeditions. To honour her outstanding contributions to marine microbiology, DSMZ researchers named the strain Streptomyces boetiae (DSM 44917) after her.
