Poster about Open Networked Learning (ONL). ONL is a derivative of Flexible,
Distance and Online Learning (FDOL) by Chrissi Nerantzi and
Lars Uhlin, licensed under CC BY NC. Unless otherwise noted,
BY NC course design and content of ONL is licensed under CC BY NC. A Democratic Practice of Open Education in Global Higher Education

ONL is delivered entirely online, enabling global
participation without physical barriers. Using open-
source tools and platforms, participants access all
course content, collaborate in virtual groups, and engage in live or asynchronous activities—making ONL a
flexible, accessible model for academic development in
digitally connected environments.
ONL embodies the principles of networked learning by
fostering connections among educators across
institutions and countries. Through collaborative
platforms and social media, participants engage in
shared inquiry, building both professional networks and
mutual understanding. This model supports knowledge
exchange and strengthens the collective agency of
global educators.
The core pedagogical method in ONL is problem-based
learning (PBL), which promotes critical thinking,
collaboration, and contextual learning. Small groups
explore real-world teaching scenarios, guided by
experienced facilitators. PBL empowers participants to
co-construct knowledge, reflect deeply, and apply
insights to their own teaching practices.
