"Imagine just a few of the major open infrastructures serving scholarship today: #arXiv, #PubMed, #DSpace, #OpenJournalSystems, or perhaps #CreativeCommons…Consider how many of these have been created on a cycle of grants and sustained on a combination of donations, membership fees, service hosting, and/or specialized development…Most scholars, teachers, and researchers…accept them as a given and depend on them…But these infrastructures are not, on the whole, sustainable businesses with robust fiscal models and diversified revenues. Many do not turn profits; most operate at steady losses that are absorbed by philanthropic and government funders and a variety of research institutions including labs, universities, and colleges. They operate on systems rife with technical debt, and they depend upon volunteer labour to cover much of their human costs from governance to editorial review to code development."

I’m very happy to be at #OpenRepos2025 in #Chicago. While technology helps to enable remote collaboration, meetings face to face deepens relationships and trust, invite new ideas to emerge and have a magic that can’t be replaced by video calls. Thanks to all people who worked hard to make this conference happen and to all who traveled around the globe to foster #repositories, #sharing of #knowledge and #openSource. @Gerrit_Heim diesen Reflex haben wir seit weit über zehn Jahren. Es fehlt die Bereitschaft anzuerkennen, dass es bei freiem Zugriff keine belastbaren Zahlen gibt, so wir nicht mit Accounts oder Captchas arbeiten möchten. Wir sollten uns hier endlich ehrlich machen und erklären warum diese Zahlen nicht lieferbar sind.

@Gerrit_Heim wenn wir Zahlen verwenden, die nicht belastbar sind, machen wir uns angreifbar. Mit dem bekannten Problemen am Status quo festzuhalten, ist gefährlich.

@Gerrit_Heim ich denke eher in Richtung Veröffentlichungsstatistiken: wie viele Selfsubmission, wieviele Zweitveröffentlichungen, die vorher hinter Paywalls standen, wie viele Veröffentlichungen insgesamt pro Zeiteinheit? Mit Blick darauf, wie wissenschaftliche Informationen in anderen Ländern gerade bedroht werden, eventuell zurückgezogen werden, sollte das den Wert wissenschaftsgeführter Infrastruktur aufzeigen. Sicherlich gibt es aber noch viel mehr gute Ideen, die wir diskutieren sollten.

Moin @Gerrit_Heim, wir brauchen andere Metriken. Es kann doch keine ernsthafte Alternative sein an Zahlen festzuhalten, die keine Grundlage haben und nicht belastbar sind?
