@mosseri oh cry me a river, you guys deteriorate the internet experience in every way possible, and now complain journalists are “unfair” for criticizing?

What’s scariest is that the West has abandoned any pretense of caring about human rights or moving beyond its colonial mindset. We are told that genocide is fine, actually, and that those who commit it are our friends. We are told to just let go and become Nazis. It is in this moment that we must decide whether we are to embrace our humanity and resist this psychopathic vision for our species and take the first steps towards a future in which humanity explores its potential among the stars or whether we simply give up and exist as orcs for as long as our habitat allows before we finally manage to destroy it.

I keep reading that the “right way” to use AI for coding is to treat it like a team of junior developers.

Wow, every developer’s dream: writing less code, managing more people, and reviewing lots of poorly written code. And with the added bonus that the “junior devs” you are pouring all this time into, will never improve as a result of your efforts.

Today marks 30 years since the premiere of 'Xena: Warrior Princess' back in 1995. A show that was never ashamed of its campiness, but at the same time managed to be groundbreaking on multiple levels. Setting new standards for female action heroines, featuring a main character that was messy and flawed, physically strong and athletic, who started as a villain seeking redemption.

Xena, despite its cheesiness and often ridiculous premise, succeeded in pushing the boundaries of queer representation, challenged stereotypes, defied several of the sexist tropes of '90s media, explored LGBTQIA+ themes, even themes of gender identity, and made a clear statement against the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS at the time.

It may not be a flawless masterpiece, but it's a beloved cult classic for good reason.

@MostlyHarmless I'm deeply annoyed how Lexxii only have 2 Xs

2025-08-06

Tech bubbles are a bit annoying. The Apple bubble for example, everyone complaining 24h per day about Apple's new weird designs, while the company is caving in for a pedophile tyrant, giving him political capital by announcing more US investment

who the f*ck cares about how a "hard drive" icon looks like with everything is happening right now?

In Brazil I could not walk anywhere because of fear of robbery

In Europe I cannot open my windows because there’s a 75% chance of infesting the whole apartment with cigarette smoke

Sounds ridiculous, but I’m really wondering which is worse 🤔

@amy well, I'm re-reading the discussion that lead me to this conclusion, and now I'm thinking that perhaps the issue it's not indeed lack of technical understanding, but actually the desire to boot lick the CEO and get promoted, combined with a total lack of trust on the technical team that leads to these disasters.

Main conversation was deleted, but this comment sums up the whole thing: reddit.com/r/ExperiencedDevs/c

2025-06-27

@amy you might see that from young and inexperienced engineers (or engineers working on the companies that profits from all this)

but in my bubble of old and experienced devs, the response has been mostly skepticism and sometimes some "yeah it's useful for some minor things"

Just look at the experiencedDevs sub reddit, people are quite mad about their managers pushing AI into them. Many actually surprised on how little their managers understand about their work

@stilloranged
weird interaction with a student this week. they kept coming up with weird "facts" ("greek is actually a combination of four other languages") that left me baffled. i said let's look this stuff up together, and they said ok, i'll open a search bar, and they opened... ch*tgpt@stilloranged
and i was like "this is not a search bar" and they were like "yes it is, you can search for anything in here"
the thing that made me feel crazy is like. every kid that's using this as a browser is getting new BESPOKE false "facts." this isn't "a widespread misconception about X that stems from how it's taught in schools." each individual kid is now hooked into a Nonsense Machine. With the "widespread misconception about X" you can start at a baseline. like, ok, in tenth grade we all talk about X thing from history, and that leaves us with some misguided concepts about X, but we can correct that as students get broader understandings of the world. But with this, each child is getting UNIQUE wrong facts they are SURE are correct...
because they did what we told them to do! they "looked it up"! they got it from somewhere! it's not a kid making up a belief on hearsay and assumption... it's something they think they LEARNED@stilloranged:
this kid was extremely combative with me, and i understood why. i was sitting in front of him and telling him that the internet, a computer, technology, all these supposedly authoritative things... were wrong. and that i, one person, was right. he basically *couldn't* believe me. he decided that i was simply a teacher who'd made a mistake. he could check it, after all! he could look it up! he could find the REAL facts. i obviously hadn't done that, i was just an adult who'd decided i was smarter than him. hence the defensiveness. like i said: i understood. it was so fucking rough. i did my best, but i am one person trying to work against a campaign of misinformation so vast that it fucking terrifies me. this kid is being set up for a life lived entirely inside the hall of mirrors
2025-06-24

@amy I used to believe firmly in this, but now with all the nonsensical AI push from managers, I wonder if that’s wrong..

2025-06-18

@MostlyHarmless Not sure about that one, I'm having much more fun as an adult than as a kid

Sure, work sucks, I know. But at least now, after work I can go play, do sports and other fun stuff

@siracusa @phirst as a Tarantino fan, all this negativity about a single use of the word “shit” is really confusing to me

@marinaaisa ohh, I’m super curious about the European commenters on that video

I used to love living here, but I’ve seen so much xenophobia from seemingly normal people on the internet

Check out the cool animations folders have when you drag a file over them... they open up. Then if they're filled, the folder shows papers in them, otherwise they don't. They also have an animation for when the file does actually move into it.

This was in Mac OS X even in the Tiger days but nice they bring back some charm. I also like these folders more than the one we previously had with Big Sur to Sequoia. They look far less childish.

I think it will be the first time I'll skip watching a WWDC since I started working with mobile more than a decade ago!

It's funny, because I always was skeptic of Apple doomsayers, but nowadays I just cannot get excited about their stuff anymore

@kelset actually it’s working really well on low end android devices!
