I do research, mostly about gender in film. Interested in networks, narratives, representation, digital humanities, R, creative and cultural industries, open source software and open science.

The more mental energy you expend parsing a programming language's syntax, the less you have available for parsing a program's logic—or creating it yourself. This is why core fluency is so important; it frees up your own compute cycles for more important work.

It's also another reason why "vibe coding" is so toxic. It robs you of the opportunity to gain that fluency.

Boosted the Instapaper post because, with the exception of gaming stuff, it's the only non-FOSS software I use and I think it's great. They've had ample opportunity to adopt the usual shady business practices, but the service remains free, adless and apparently unconcerned with endless growth. As far as I know, the vibes are solid.

For those Pocket users who prefer a FOSS alternative, I hear Wallabag (wallabag.org/) is good. There's also Shiori (github.com/go-shiori/shiori) and Readeck (readeck.org/en/).

Never not astonished by how oblivious academics giving presentations are to how long they've been talking for relative to their allotted time.

Help kind people: Any ideas why I'd be getting an error like this when trying to render a Quarto blog on a Linux server recently updated with R and RStudio? I've been trying to track this down for hours. The file doesn't have any <

Time for an updated pinned post introduction!

Hello folks. I'm an early career researcher mostly investigating gender inequities in the film industry, both on-screen and in the production process. My background is in social sciences and social research methods, and I mostly work with social network analysis and relational data.

I'm from the UK but based in Brazil and always looking for remote opportunities that align with my research interests.

At a meta level, something I find mildly interesting is how many people are writing stuff on Mastodon about how it's impossible for Mastodon to scale up without using an ad supported model (b/c server costs), it's better to have ranked feeds because most people want them, etc.

The thing I think is interesting is that the people writing this stuff, implicitly, seemingly cannot conceive of a model where the organization is not growth and profit maximizing.

We are delighted that Glasgow Caledonian University will host the 2023 Annual MeCCSA Conference on 4-6 Sept.

This change in host institution is due to Falmouth University plans for employing staff using a subsidiary company.

Thanks to @unicornCoder, we have a repo (github.com/r-lgbtq/tidyrainbow) that holds datasets pertaining to the LGBTQ+ community. We look for data sets where LGBTQ+ folk are explicitly represented and where it is not assumed that gender is binary.

These data sets provide great opportunities for data analysis and visualisation in #rstats and other languages.

They're also an excellent option for teaching and moving away from the standard data science examples.

I bought my custom domain on GoDaddy a few years ago before I realised that GoDaddy was bad. Does anyone have any experience with moving a domain (especially one that's not as simple as a .com) to a more ethical domain registrar that you'd be willing to share with me?

I've been doing a lot of digital house-cleaning this last year or so and this is a thing that I never get around to sorting out...

@ElBartoArmy

Often Mastodon's features work the way they do because it was first populated by people who had been harassed on FB and the Birdsite.

For instance (not sorry), you cannot search Masto for a simple term. Only #hashtags. Say you're having a conversation about iguanas with some of your mutual followers. Anti-iguana trolls will not be able to search for "iguana", find your conversation, and drop into it to say, "Iguana luvers suck!"

But if you are wanting to connect with new iguana fanciers on Mastodon, slipping an #iguanas hashtag somewhere into your posts will allow people to search and find them.
