@junesim63 @heidilifeldman I get it, thanks for the information. It is just a real shame that this situation somehow justifies a hostile takeover of California's NG. I don't believe the governor is legally powerless. This article talks about some of the legal implications, and how governors in fact did refuse Trump in 2020:
@arbres @heidilifeldman I'm aware of all this. I was trying to figure out what justification they used to go over his head, but I can't find anything specific. What I say is not bullshit, it's how the system is normally supposed to work. I hope he sues the federal government, and does everything possible to obstruct. Statements aren't going to help anything.
People need to stop appending catty and mean remarks about 'people' to their replies, especially when they actually mean one person (me).
@kurtsh In theory, the federal government should not be able to "deploy the California National Guard" on their own. But they are. Does state sovereignty still exist in the U.S., or are we just a unitary government with 50 provinces at this point?
If the federal government can bypass the system and grab any governor's National Guard with impunity, then state sovereignty truly has become a farce in the United States. We might as well be a unitary government with fifty provinces at this point, if the feds have their hooks in everything. Sad, sad, sad.
@heidilifeldman If they are using National Guardsmen for this purpose, then the governor of California is cooperating. Why? He could refuse to activate them, and force them to use federal troops.
@biplanepilot So....the governor of California is just going along with all this? He has operational control of the NG, and could refuse to act. They are not under federal control unless activated for such a purpose.
@QasimRashid The sad thing is that the governor(s) of whatever state's NG they are using could simply refuse to activate their units and turn them over to the federal government, if they had any backbone. It's not wartime, there is no disaster, and Guardsmen aren't going to be any better riot police than the police whose job it is normally. It's a dangerous political stunt, is all.
Well, I've been on mastodon for years, and I've only met a few people in passing to whom I talked for any length of time. I rarely have meaningful conversations, and that's sad. I am wondering if the whole twitter format in general is really conducive to such things, or if it really is just a chaotic mass of people firing off opinions, like some sort of RSS feed from hell? #jaded
@DarthAstrius: I was once in the military, but I am in no way indicative of what is normal. Not my problem anymore.
@QasimRashid: Not sure how many active duty military there are frequenting mastodon out there...
@bflipp: I've been using Rocky Linux on my server for years. I don't entirely trust Debian-based stuff for servers with a lot of public-facing services. No SELinux, no easily deployable hardening profiles like RHEL. The downside is that nearly every helpful guide on the internet is written for Ubuntu so some on-the-fly creativity has always been necessary on my part.
I'm deleting all my photos on Google and it takes forever because there's no way to do it quickly. Pray for me.
Can anyone give me tips on managing a RHEL like server? Controlling network traffic would be nice. They all just do what they want to pretty much atm.
