Look, I know AI is controversial, but just for a moment, let's set aside our preconceived notions, our biases, the environmental impact, the massive cost to train and run models, the labor exploitation, the intellectual property theft, the inaccuracies, the mania it causes in users, the destruction of search, the deskilling of professionals, the devaluation of creative work, job losses, and lack of economic value from enterprise implementations.
Wait, what were we talking about?
"Trapping AI" – Slight Update! 🌀
Activity in the "Trapping AI" project is accelerating: in just under a month, over 26 million requests have hit our tarpit URLs 🕳️. Vast volumes of meaningless content were devoured by AI crawlers — ruthless digital leeches that relentlessly scour and pillage the web, leaving no data untouched.
In the coming days, we’ll roll out a new layer of complexity — amplifying both the intensity and offensiveness of our approach. This escalation builds on fakejpeg
, a tool developed by @pengfold.
🖼️ fakejpeg
generates fake JPEGs on the fly. You "train" it with a collection of existing JPEGs, and once trained, it can produce an arbitrary number of things that look like real JPEGs — perfect for feeding aggressive web crawlers junk 🗑️.

I just had to take my name off a manuscript (not yet public) because it turned out that one of the coauthors had been using ChatGPT to help them write it all along without telling the rest of us and I don't want my name on that.
It didn't help that the same day I had to remove over 50% of a long Wikipedia article on algorithms because for months some editor had been using an LLM to expand it, complete with falsified references whose links went to actual papers on unrelated topics.

A depressing fable about how ChatGPT is corroding trust in scholarship
In preparation for next week’s keynote on generative AI and the crisis of trust, I picked up a book about trust by a philosopher, who I’ve decided not to name, when I saw it in the Tate bookshop earlier today. It began with a quote from bell hooks which caught my attention:
Trust is both a personal and a political endeavour, an affirmation of our shared humanity and our collective potential for growth and transformation. By embracing trust, by fostering connections, grounded in love and compassion, we have the power to not only change our own lives but also to reshape the world around us…
I wanted to post it on my blog, so I immediately looked for a citation. I could find no result for the exact quote but Google returned this site at the top of the list, where I found nearly the same quote:
In the end, trust is both a personal and a political endeavor, an affirmation of our shared humanity and our collective potential for growth and transformation. By embracing trust, by fostering connections grounded in love and compassion, we have the power to not only change our own lives but also to reshape the world around us, one relationship at a time.
The problem is that this site hosts imagined responses by philosophers to the question ‘what is trust?’ produced by ChatGPT. These (genuinely quite interesting) LLM outputs were posted in April 2023, only to feature in a book published in 2024. I can find no other source for the quote the author includes, other than this nearly exact quote produced by ChatGPT.
The most obvious explanation here is that they decided they want to start the book with a quote from bell hooks. They then typed in ‘bell hooks and trust’ which returns the site above as its second result. They didn’t read the introduction which explains the exercise with the LLM and instead copy & pasted the ChatGPT output into his book, without checking for the source of the citation.
The irony being that I now don’t trust the rest of the book. A philosopher writing a book about trust begins the book with such lazy scholarship that I now struggle to trust them. I hope I’m wrong. But without wishing to personalise things, I’m tempted to use this an example in next week’s keynote. It illustrate how LLMs are contributing to an environment in which lazy scholarship, cherry picking a quote from a google search, becomes much riskier given the circulation of synthetic content.

How time has flown. Here's to thirty more great years! 🎉

Apple researchers have published a new paper; it’s pretty devastating to LLMs, and is a powerful followup to one from many of the same authors last year.

I've just given Kagi Assistant a try and I think I get why people enjoy using generative AI. It seems so easy!
However, it felt a bit like doing drugs for the first time. While enjoying it, I knew how bad it could be if I started doing it more often, eventually becoming dependent.
I arrived at Hamburg main station, tracks 13+14 - just where over a week ago, a mentally ill German woman injured 15 in a brutal knife attack, some severely. She was stopped by two men: a young refugee from Syria and a man from Chechnya. The press quickly dropped the case.
That had not at all been the case when a similarly ill man, but a refugee, killed two in Bavaria. For weeks, up to our elections, this tragic event was heavily exploited to push anti-migrant politics.
Honesty, and humanity.
