For those just learning about LibGen because of the reporting on Meta and other companies training LLMs on pirated books, I’d highly recommend the book Shadow Libraries (open access: https://direct.mit.edu/books/oa-edited-volume/3600/Shadow-LibrariesAccess-to-Knowledge-in-Global).
I just read it while working on the Wikipedia article about shadow libraries, and it’s a fascinating history. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_library
I fear the already fraught conversations about shadow libraries will take a turn for the worse now that it’s overlapping with the incredibly fraught conversations about AI training.
I cannot access the AMA Journal of Ethics at https://journalofethics.ama-assn.org/. I'm not blaming the journal,.
Instead we have to ask: Is this the result of predatory AI bots running riot? The number of cases where I can't access pages due to ‘protection measures’ is obviously increasing.
These AI bots need to be stopped by regulation. The technical arms race cannot be won. And there are people behind the bots, so perhaps they need to be targeted.

@anotherfami @nb @VDB_Vorstand ich finde die Ideen auch alle sehr gut. Zusätzlich wäre m.E. auch ein konsequentes Streaming bzw. hybride Organisation wünschenswert, die leicht zugänglich ist. Es sind nicht allein die Kosten, die Menschen von einer Teilnahme abhalten, sondern z.B. auch gesundheitliche Einschränkungen oder Care-Arbeit (pflegende Angehörige, Alleinerziehende, usw.).
