Posted Cards

Hello! Postcards are underappreciated in my opinion and I wanted a dedicated place to share my interest in them.

Profile picture: A postcard from Ehagaki Sekai (The World of Illustrated Postcards) published by Miyatake Gaikotsu as an accompaniment to his monthly Kokkei Shinbun (Humorous Journal) in Japan from 1907-1909.

Header picture: A postcard by Austrian artist Raphael Kirchner. Published in ~1910.

Photo manipulation isn't a new craft. Here is an example of an exaggerated or "tall-tale" real photo postcard. (1909)

"Tall-tale postcards affirmed the fundamental American myth of agricultural abundance — a myth that often diametrically opposed reality. Ultimately, these deceptions remain benign by way of their sheer absurdity, injecting a light-hearted, often humorous note into a landscape seldom willing to offer its own." A real photo postcard from 1909. In the foreground are cows in a pen and a barn. Next to and behind the barn appears to be enormous stalks of corn, dozens of feet tall. It is titled "The land of big corn."

A hand painted postcard of Mt. Fuji, c.1920. The only postcard in my collection with impasto.

A painting of Mt. Fuji. The mountain itself is in the background. In the foreground is water with waves cresting. Then there are trees or other greenery, followed by foothills, and then the mountain itself. The sky is done in colors that might indicate a sunrise or sunset.

An advertisement postcard for a technical school in New Jersey. On the left side of the image, you can see the front of one of the television sets being worked with. It appears to be an RCA 621TS (earlytelevision.org/rca_621.ht). The card was postmarked in 1949, more than two years before the first national live television broadcast.

A brief #introduction since this is a new account.

#Art and #history have always been primary interests of mine and collecting postcards is an inexpensive way to enjoy both of those things. This account is my dedicated place to share that hobby with the fediverse.

Postcards were/are the social media of snail mail. Before cameras were common, they were the easiest way to share artwork or photographs. Don't underestimate how engaging they can be!
