How do end-users trust the AI system they interact with?

In our #FAccT2023 paper, we interviewed 20 end-users of a real-world AI application (merlin.allaboutbirds.org/) and explored what factors affect their trust in AI and how.

โ“ How can explainable AI (XAI) methods support human-AI interaction in the real world?

We interviewed 20 end-users of a real-world AI application, the Merlin app for bird identification (merlin.allaboutbirds.org), and asked about their XAI needs, uses, and perceptions.

1/5 Excited to share our upcoming paper exploring effortful communication, which won the *best paper award* at #CSCW2022. We built a communication system that encourages people to invest meaningful effort through digitally handcrafted AR experiences. arxiv.org/abs/2207.07771

Our paper on the privacy practices of labor organizers won an "Impact Recognition" award at !

Much like the current migration from Twitter, organizers worked around technical and social constraints about where they talk and with whom, and how to moderate community conversations.

But unlike the Twitter migration, they often did this with zero institutional knowledge, since few organizers had done this remotely before the pandemic!

Backstory of our team's best-paper-award-winning AR project ๐Ÿ† at #CSCW2022

Around 2021, @fannieliu got our team interested in a new puzzle: how could it be that (even before covid) society experienced a "loneliness epidemic" despite living in a 24/7 digitally connected world?

Perhaps, in an attempt to reduce friction, digital interactions decreased their meaningfulness and authenticity. Just compare the feeling of getting a Facebook โ€˜likeโ€™ with getting a handwritten note in the mail.

Woman blowing on her phone to send a virtual bear.

From the paper: To send an auggie, users blow wind at their phone, which triggers an AR paper plane to fly into the distance, carrying a bear over to their partner
