@iworx it doesn't seem difficult to find multi-nic minis in Europe, lucky you. Even so, I don't see the point of spending more on a mini pc if a router with openwrt can do the job.

@nanianmichaels thank you! I appreciate the info. I looked at a number of models with the N100 and N150 cpu and none have dual nics locally. Aliexpress has a bunch of them, but I'm not familiar with any of the brands. The shipping cost bumps the price significantly. I'll keep looking!

2025-06-21

@nanianmichaels definitely not too late, I'd love to try OPNsense on a more powerful device, so please share some links. I looked at a few but none were locally available in South Africa and they were at least 4 to 5 times the price of the routers I bought. The price isn't my main criteria, I just need to be sure I'm buying the right thing before committing to an import.

@sef For the cost and power I use RPi to do heavier lifting than just routing and firewall, but I have plans with RPi and OpenWRT as a travel router. I bought a LTE hat for it a while ago.

@iworx to add a pci network card for extra ethernet ports. Since most mini PCs only have one ethernet port, you need to add another one to split WAN and local traffic.

PeerTube crowdfunding goal reached! support.joinpeertube.org/en/

I hope all the years of carefully crafted home-rolled video tutorials can migrate to something like PeerTube. It seems inevitable that Google will shut it down at some point ...

The discussion about the router I picked started in 2022. At first, you had to open the router and do some soldering. Over time, it evolved to checking a button to SSH into it to download the image directly on the device. forum.openwrt.org/t/openwrt-su

I just bought two $55 ASUS RT-AX53U routers compatible with OpenWRT. I love how the OpenWRT hardware compatibility page (toh.openwrt.org/) has a link to detailed installation instructions for a particular router brand and model and even a forum link where it is discussed in some cases!

2025-06-21

My ASUS router doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy about my network's security, so I'm finally doing something about it. My options are OpenWRT and pfSense/OPNsense. It's surprisingly hard to find mini-PCs with two network interfaces, and finding a PCI card that fits into it is a hassle. Besides, it's much cheaper to buy a router with WAN, WiFi and Ethernet all rolled into a single device and flash it with OpenWRT. Sadly, my current router isn't compatible, but ...

VictoriaLogs inevitably leads you to VictoriaMetrics. These two bullets in their docs are tempting me to rip out Prometheus, too!

- It provides high performance and good vertical and horizontal scalability for both data ingestion and data querying . It outperforms InfluxDB and TimescaleDB by up to 20x .
- It uses 10x less RAM than InfluxDB and up to 7x less RAM than Prometheus, Thanos or Cortex when dealing with millions of unique time series (aka high cardinality ).

After one too many Loki gateway timeouts, I started looking for an alternative to Loki for log aggregation in our Kubernetes clusters. I found VictoriaLogs (lnkd.in/dsFwb6qr) and am very impressed with its resource efficiency and speed! They're not lying when they say, "It uses up to 30x less RAM and up to 15x less disk space than other solutions such as Elasticsearch and Grafana Loki."

I've deployed it to three clusters and am close to the point where I can confidently endorse it.

I've been following the progress on the Ladybird browser for a while and I love seeing how it is gaining momentum. This video introduces some of the developers and the goals of the project. I'm in awe to see how such a long term vision becomes a reality. youtu.be/B0laZuKyWsg?si=iH_SIz

@abosio you can do that without forking, just rotate the scene till it's vertical.

@chrism that's totally fine as long as long you can still acknowledge it as great work of art.

@kravemir @voidcontext I'm not dependent on the MinIO Admin UI and don't use it often. I'm more concerned about MinIO's abuse of an open-source licence, using it for "marketing" purposes and then ditching it once they have traction. Rook Ceph is a rock-solid alternative with a vibrant open-source community. I've wanted to try it out for a long time, and this is a great reason to do it.

2025-05-27

@kravemir I noticed from the Reddit post that there is already a fork but I'm not sure I want to use that. Garage was also mentioned in the thread. Rook Ceph also supports S3 storage rook.io/docs/rook/latest-relea. I'm going to research a few options over the next few days to see what works best.

2025-05-27

This is shocking! MinIO removed the admin UI from the open-source version in a PR that effectively removes 110K lines.

reddit.com/r/selfhosted/commen

Over the last couple of months, I deployed three Kubernetes clusters with MinIO storage clusters. I don't depend on the admin UI, but this project was clearly open-sourced for the wrong reasons. I guess it's time to replace it.
