Today in Labor History May 25, 2020: Police murdered George Floyd in Minneapolis, setting off a worldwide wave of anti-police brutality protests. But the protests have had little effect on the problem. While the number of police murders declined slightly the following year, dropping from 1,146 in 2020 to 1,045 in 2021, the rate of police murder has grown every year since 2021, according to data on Wikipedia. In 2024, the police killed 1,400 people (nearly 4 a day), a 22% increase over 2020, the year Floyd was murdered. And there have already been 511 police murders in 2025. If this rate continues, there could be 1,300 by the end of the year.

Welp, I have just cancelled my Microsoft Office 365 recurring subscription.

Two reasons.

1. I only ever use it to check tracked changes to the copy edits on novels—once a year—which my publishers process in Word. As of this month, LibreOffice is good enough for the job (just tested at book length).

2. CoPilot in Office would open me up to accusations of breach of contract—my book contracts warrant that they're all my own work: CoPilot brings that into question.

So good riddance to Office365!
