Identity clarification: I'm an Autistic with Canadian citizenship, not a Canadian with Autism.

When I was born the Dominion of Canada (Rebranded "Canada" in 1982) claimed me as a citizen.

I present male, and understand the unearned priviledge this has granted me, but don't believe in a gender binary tied to chromosomes.

Jesse Hirsh and I speak from the future.

Well, Jesse spoke from the future when it comes to thinking about the current state of individualism and “western civilization”, and I was left wondering how long it will take loyalists to those worldviews (from the left and right of the Western political spectrum) to catch up to him.

There is no longer a “Minister of Canadian Heritage”?

r.flora.ca/p/canadian-heritage

Will this mean the end of the Department of Canadian Heritage, and the Heritage committee? Is that too much wishful thinking on my part?

I hope this means the conflict of interest that this generated is gone, and that Broadcast and Copyright policy won’t be put under “Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages”.

If you are in the USA watching these rallys, and wanting to know how to actually make something happen, then you need to also know about fairvote.org/

Ballot ranking enfranchises those who don't see either the Democrats or the Republicans as a solution.

(Canada needs ballot ranking as well, to avoid things getting as bad as the USA)

I really want to know: Is reminding Canadians that the “Dominion of Canada” is still a constitutional monarchy with a foreign head of state (subjectively defined concept of “foreign interference”) really a good thing to do at this specific moment of political instability?

While I might add more to the story (creation of Alberta and Saskatchewan from NWT in 1905, territorial expansions of Ontario and Quebec into NWT, etc), this is very useful for understanding some of the history behind Canadian politics. There are far too many who want to look at only a few years or a decade as if that tells them something important. History, even things that happened before you were born, is critical to understanding what is happening today.

@krupo @cazabon

It shouldn't have to matter when the polls close.

Elections Canada (staff, scrutineers, erc) shouldn't be communicating any results until a certain percentage of polls across the entire country have come in.

This desire by Partisans and media to declare an executive branch under a Westminster Parliamentary system as quickly as possible is harmful to Canada's Democracy and needs to end.

@bassoonwrath @beecycling

Understood.

I personally believe that policy didn't address the underlying issue, and focused on the wrong target.

The problem in that specific case wasn't the media, but Elections Canada under misdirection of parties in executive and legislative branches.

Partisans were always trying to push their special interest narratives. The job of the media should be to hold politicians and parties to account, not join their misinformation campaigns.

Canadian media report the "winner" (meaning, party will form government -- or worse, declare Prime Minister) before much of anything is counted in Western Canada. It isn't a random filling-in , but a consistent "East determines the outcome, the West doesn't matter".

This isn't an Internet thing -- this is how I've observed Canadian media reporting on elections since I was a child (Born 1968).

UK doesn't use Party Leadership conventions for all parties, etc...

Yet another election where the media isn't doing their job.

Instead of helping Canadians understand the Westminster Parliamentary system that Canada uses, they report as if it were a US Presidential election.

Reporting as the sun crosses from east to west, generating Western alienation.

Elections Canada should be able to fine the media for this harm to Canada’s Democratic Institutions.

For what might be obvious reasons, I watched the interview of Pierre Poilievre first as he has been the most vocal settler-colonial thinker of any of the leaders.

My notes from the 2021 Canadian Federal General Election, which included links to things I wrote about the 2019 election.

I was sent a link to a poll being done by the NDP on election priorities. Mine are:

* Reform of Democratic Institutions (End Party Leadership conventions, end narrow focus on top-down corporate leadership structures for parties, adopt STV to end vote splitting&strategic voting, end focus on false notion of “party popular vote”, end treating elected parliamentarians as if they are “staff” of corporate parties rather than equal caucus members, etc)

* Ending Canada’s Genocide Denialism (RCAP, TRC, MMIWG, Gaza, etc)

Most of my notes at r.flora.ca/notes during the time of this General Election have been about reform of Democratic Institutions. The cult of personality of the “leaders” of parties puts Canada in as dangerous a situation as the USA has found itself in.
