"Lefty Loosey, Righty Tightey" may be the most important hack I've learned in life.
@stevegis_ssg @henribus @lukito it’s so difficult! I’ve definitely been there :P
@repeattofade I mean, you could make the argument that most music is mathematical in a way. Take the circle of fifths as an example 😅
@stevegis_ssg @lukito
Whispering still works in tonal languages.
Tones are only important when contextual clues aren't enough to distinguish differences in meanings between tones.
With enough context, wrong tones or the lack of tones are not a hindrance to understanding.
WHERE TONES ARE CRITICAL TO UNDERSTANDING
• Giving the address to a taxi driver
• Giving a name
WHERE WRONG OR MISSING TONES ARE OKAY
• Chatting
• Ordering drinks at a bar

As for songs, it depends on the language.
Mandarin and Taiwanese songs typically don't make any association between tones and notes/pitches. In music, it's as if those two languages become atonal.
OTOH, Cantonese songs require the pitch contour of the lyrical text to be respected within a musical phrase. For example, a high note followed by a low note requires a word with a high-low syllable pair. Off pitch lyrics are very jarring to Cantonese ears.
@henribus @lukito @stevegis_ssg part of that is training though, they get taught to reduce their vowels to ahhhh as they get higher in pitch because it’s much harder/impossible to try and voice other vowels at those pitches.
We're all feral around here...
It occurred to me that the Victorinox website must sort their Swiss army knives by tools. And it didn't disappoint me.
They even have a knife called Cheese Master, which includes a fondue fork. I love it.

@age yeah, like concerns about data privacy, how to validate output, etc.
You know, the things we normally do with computers, but everyone seems to want to ignore suddenly 🙃
Cooking only ever seems "fun" for about half the time it requires.
Mind you I did enjoy it more in the family home, with a big kitchen and a good sound system. Maybe it's just shitty apartment kitchens that get me down.
An extremely welcome initiative from the 🇪🇺 #eu:
🔋Phone Batteries must retain 80% capacity after 800 cycles.
📱Phone makers must provide 5 years of updates,
🪛 are banned from discriminating against repair shops,
🔧 and must provide parts for 7 years after EOL

@thepupdenali This sounds awesome. I wish we had more queer events like this in my town.
@coolandnormal If more recipes used weights instead of cups, I think I’d like that more… but I recognise that it’s not generally useful to do this for small quantities like with spices — the cost of decent scales at that range is prohibitive, when approximations are fine.
I do also find the Australian cup/tablespoon vs American cup/tablespoon thing a bit annoying.
@digiyote Same with wetsuits!
Just had to share this, a friend of mine found a working flat screen tv at the dump and is using it for #DnD battle maps. And I just had to share because 1) that's so clever and 2) headlines are always complaining about immigrants/single mums/people on benefit/other demonised groups having flat screen TVs, but you can quite literally pick the things up for free that someone else has thrown away.
Vienna granted asylum to a spherical micronation in 1982, changed their mind, fought all the way to the supreme court, lost, then gave up.
It's still sat in a public park and has 650 citizens.
